This method was successfully used during the 1673 siege of Maastricht.

Vauban also transformed how France viewed its own borders. He viewed France as a single, coherent geographical entity. He advocated for a defensible border by giving up certain territories. He proposed a line of fortresses known as the "Ceinture de fer," or iron belt.

This belt protected France's northern and eastern borders. The boundaries he proposed for these regions have changed very little since his time. His work on the "iron belt" proved its value during the later years of the Nine Years' War.

Vauban's life began in May 1633 in Saint-Léger-de-Foucheret. His family belonged to the minor nobility in the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region. As a young boy, he studied mathematics, science, and geometry at a college. These subjects were vital for his future work in managing space. In 1655, he was appointed as the "Ingénieur du Roi," or Royal Engineer. He was a courageous officer who was wounded eight times during his career. By 1703, he reached the high rank of Maréchal de France.

His work extended far beyond the battlefield into civilian infrastructure. Vauban upgraded many major French ports to increase military effectiveness. He also worked on projects like the Canal de la Bruche.

He founded a school based on his own principles of design and strategy. Modern scholars estimate he supervised or designed roughly 160 different fortifications.

Vauban was also a thinker regarding social and economic issues. In 1707, he published an economic tract titled "La Dîme royale." This work used statistics to argue for a fairer tax system. He proposed a flat 10% tax on all agricultural and industrial output. He believed the nobility and clergy should no longer be exempt from taxes. Although the king ordered his work destroyed, it remains a precursor to modern economics. Vauban died in Paris on March 30, 1707.
