An S-Bahn is a special kind of train system used in many cities. 

The way an S-Bahn works depends on where the train is traveling. In the outer suburbs, the stations are often far apart. This helps the trains maintain a steady speed. In the city center, the system often uses a dedicated trunk line. This might be an underground tunnel or an elevated track. 

The history of this system began in Germany. The first S-Bahn network started in Berlin in December 1930.
Many different cities have created their own versions of this rail network.

In contrast, the central trunk lines operate with much higher frequency. These central sections often use dedicated underground or elevated tracks. In large systems, a train might arrive every two minutes. 

S-Bahn systems can be categorized by how they interact with their surroundings. Some systems serve a single central city core. Others, like the Rhine-Ruhr S-Bahn, interconnect multiple urban centers. This allows people to move between different cities in a large region. The design of the rolling stock, or the actual train cars, also reflects this hybrid role. The interiors are designed for two types of passengers. They include standing room for people making very short trips. They also provide more seating comfort than a standard metro train for long-distance commuters.
The history of the S-Bahn began with the development of electric railways in Germany. The term is an abbreviation of the German words Stadtschnellbahn, meaning "city rapid railway."
Other cities developed their own versions of this concept at different times. In Denmark, the Copenhagen S-tog opened its first line in 1934.
Modern S-Bahn concepts have even influenced systems in Asia. China has a history of suburban railways, which are called Shìjiāo tiělù in pinyin. In the early years of the People's Republic of China, these were slow trains with limited capacity. However, a modern version of the rapid urban-suburban railway returned in 2011. The Beijing Suburban Railway began using S-prefixed numbers and integrated into the city transport system. This helped spread the concept to other metropolitan cities across China.
S-Bahn systems are almost always integrated into a city's wider public transport network. This integration usually involves unified ticketing systems. This means one ticket can be used for both the S-Bahn and the metro. Interchange stations are common, allowing passengers to switch between different types of transit easily. This connectivity makes the S-Bahn a fundamental part of the urban infrastructure. It links the quiet suburbs to the busy city center through a fast, reliable corridor.
