Many hard things led to the revolution. Russia was fighting in World War I. The war caused many problems for the people. There were not enough supplies like bread and grain. This made people very hungry and unhappy. In the cities, prices for food went up a lot. This happened because the government printed too much money. Workers also faced long hours and dangerous jobs in factories. These problems made people want to change their leaders.

By March, Russia had two different groups trying to lead.

One group, the Bolsheviks, became very popular. They were a far-left party led by Vladimir Lenin.

This era saw Russia abolish its monarchy to adopt a socialist government. This shift followed two separate revolutions and a long civil war. The events in Russia served as a precursor for other movements. For example, the German Revolution of 1918–1919 was influenced by these changes. It remains one of the most significant historical turning points in modern history.

Several deep-seated problems created the conditions for unrest. Russia was struggling during World War I. The German Empire inflicted many defeats on the Russian front.

This caused the Russian Army to lose morale. Logistics problems led to severe shortages of bread and grain. To fund the war, the government printed millions of roubles. This caused massive inflation. By 1917, prices had increased up to four times higher than in 1914. This economic crisis made life very difficult for everyone.

In the cities, workers faced terrible conditions. Many worked 11 to 12 hours every day. They lived in overcrowded housing with poor sanitation. Workers also dealt with low wages and dangerous factory jobs. In the countryside, peasants wanted land reform. They believed land should belong to those who work it.

These social tensions grew throughout the war years. Even the ruling class began to lose confidence in the Tsar.

The first major stage was the February Revolution in 1917.

Widespread protests and strikes broke out in Petrograd. The situation became so unstable that Tsar Nicholas II abdicated his throne. This ended the Romanov monarchy. A Provisional Government was formed to lead the country. This government was led by the Duma, which is a parliament.

However, a second power center emerged during this time.

Local workers and soldiers formed councils called Soviets.

By March 1917, Russia had two rival governments. The Provisional Government handled military and international affairs. The Soviets held domestic power and the loyalty of the working class. Various political factions competed for influence. These included the Mensheviks, Social Revolutionaries, Anarchists, and the Bolsheviks. The Bolsheviks were a far-left party led by Vladimir Lenin.

They gained support with a simple program: peace, land, and bread.

The second stage was the October Revolution. This was an armed insurrection by the Bolsheviks in Petrograd. They successfully overthrew the Provisional Government. The Bolsheviks established the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic, or RSFSR. This was the world's first socialist state. They aimed to practice soviet democracy on a large scale. To focus on internal matters, they signed the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk with Germany in March 1918. This ended Russia's participation in World War I.

Following the revolution, a violent civil war erupted. The conflict pitted the "Reds," who were the Bolsheviks, against the "Whites."

The White movement included monarchists, liberals, and various nationalist groups. Leon Trotsky helped organize the Red Army to defend the Bolsheviks. The war caused immense suffering across the empire. During this time, the Bolsheviks also established the Cheka. This was a secret police service used to target perceived enemies. The struggle was intense in both cities and rural provinces.

The revolutionary period concluded around 1922. This happened after the White Army and separatist factions were defeated.

The Bolshevik Party reorganized into the All-Union Communist Party. To ensure stability, the RSFSR began unifying various nations under one flag. This process eventually created the Soviet Union. This new political system remained in power for six decades. The revolution fundamentally changed how nations organized their economies and social structures.
