His life changed because of a special meeting. Rumi was originally expected to be an Islamic scholar like his father. This was the path his family planned for him. However, he met a wandering dervish named Shams Tabrizi. 
Rumi was born around September 30, 1207. His family came from a place called Balkh. 
He wrote many important books during his life. One of his greatest works is called the Masnavi. 
After he died on December 17, 1273, his followers continued his work. 

Jalāl al-Dīn Muḥammad Rūmī was a profound Sufi mystic and poet. 
His life was shaped by movement and migration. Rumi was born around September 30, 1207. His family originally hailed from Balkh, a major center of Persian culture. 
Education and family lineage were vital to his early years. His father, Bahā' al-Dīn Walad, was an outstanding Sufi and a scholar. Rumi was expected to follow his father's footsteps as an Islamic scholar. He was exposed to Sufi thought from his very early childhood. His father was also connected to the spiritual lineage of Najm al-Din Kubra. This background provided a strong foundation in Islamic Persian culture. This culture dominated the eastern lands of Islam during his time. It influenced many people, including modern Turks, Afghans, and Persians.
A single encounter changed the direction of Rumi's life. While living in Konya, he met a wandering dervish named Shams Tabrīzī. 
Rumi was a highly skilled multilingual communicator. His mother tongue was Persian, which he used for his primary writing. He also used Arabic as a learned language for study. 
His literary contributions are considered masterpieces of the Persian language. His most famous work is the Masnavi. 
After his death on December 17, 1273, Rumi's legacy grew through his followers.
