After that, it became an independent agency of the Government of Ontario. This change helped the museum grow into the large institution it is today.

A second phase opened on October 12, 1933. This expansion created an east wing facing Queen's Park. During the Great Depression, workers used local materials for this project. The 1933 expansion introduced a neo-Byzantine style and an elaborate rotunda. This rotunda features a ceiling of gold back-painted glass mosaic tiles.

A major transformation occurred during the Renaissance ROM project. This project began in 2002 to modernize the institution. The government and Canadian agencies contributed $60 million to the effort. Additionally, Michael Lee-Chin donated $30 million to the cause.

The centerpiece of this project is the Michael Lee-Chin Crystal. This deconstructivist structure was designed by architect Daniel Libeskind. It was selected from 50 finalists in an international competition. The total cost for this massive renovation reached approximately $500 million.

The museum complex is a mix of different architectural eras. It includes the 1914 heritage building and the 1933 wing. It also features the 1984 curatorial centre and the 2007 Crystal.

The original building is recognized on the Municipal Heritage Register. Recent work continues through 2026 to improve the facility. These updates include expanded skylights for more natural light.
