The Royal National Park is a major protected area in New South Wales, Australia. It sits within the Sutherland Shire near Southern Sydney. It also extends into the Illawarra region near the City of Wollongong.
The park's name has changed over time. It was originally known simply as National Park. In 1955, it was renamed to honor Queen Elizabeth II. This happened after she passed through the area on a train during her 1954 tour. In December 2006, the park was added to the Australian National Heritage List. The park sits on the traditional lands of the Dharawal people. Today, it includes several settlements like Audley, Maianbar, and Bundeena. Visitors can reach these places by road or by passenger ferry from Cronulla.
The geography of the park is very diverse. It contains coastal cliffs, beaches, and small inlets. It also features an ancient high plateau. This plateau is broken by deep river valleys. These valleys drain from south to north. They eventually run into Port Hacking. Port Hacking is a large, shallow harbor inlet that forms the northern border.
The coastline is a very distinct part of the landscape. Much of the coast is made of tall cliffs. At the southern end, these cliffs reach nearly one hundred metres in height.

Moving inland, the terrain changes significantly. The land rises into rocky ridges and plateaus. These ridges are the remains of an ancient, larger plateau. Over time, erosion has carved them into river valleys. The soil on these sandstone ridges is often sandy podsol. Some areas have pockets of clay. In other sections, the soil comes from Wianamatta clay. This is richer soil that produces high-quality forests.

Vegetation in the park responds to the environment in clever ways. Factors like bushfires and low nutrient levels shape the plants. For example, scribbly gums have smooth bark. This helps reduce their chance of catching fire. In contrast, stringy barks have bark that catches fire easily. This helps clear the way for their fire-stimulated seedlings.

People use the park for many different activities. There are many walking and cycling trails available. The most popular is the 30 kilometre Coast Walk. This track runs from Bundeena to Otford. Most walkers take two days to complete it.
