He was born in Saint-Denis, Réunion, in 1888. As a young boy, he had to stay in Cannes to get better after being sick with pneumonia. To help his health, he started cycling and even won a championship. He grew up to love many sports like football, rugby, and tennis. In 1909, he saw an airplane show in Sapicourt. This moment changed his life forever because he knew he wanted to be an aviator.

Garros worked hard to become a great pilot. He started with a small plane called a Demoiselle. This plane was so light that it only flew well with a tiny pilot. By 1910, he earned his official flying license. He then flew faster planes and entered many air races across Europe. In 1912, he even set a record for how high a plane could fly. His most famous trip happened on September 23, 1913. He flew a Morane-Saulnier G plane across the Mediterranean Sea. The flight went from France to Tunisia and lasted nearly eight hours.

During World War I, Garros became a fighter pilot for the French army. He faced a very hard job in his cockpit. He wanted to use a machine gun to hit enemy planes. However, the bullets would hit his own propeller if he fired it. To solve this, he and his mechanic, Jules Hue, made a clever tool. They attached small metal wedges to the propeller blades. These wedges acted like shields to push the bullets away. This allowed him to shoot through the propeller without breaking it.

His invention worked very well in battle. On April 1, 1915, he became the first person to shoot down an aircraft using this method. He won more victories in April of that same year. Later, his plane had engine trouble and he landed in enemy territory. He was captured and stayed in prisoner camps for almost three years. In February 1918, he and another pilot named Anselme Marchal escaped. They traveled through the Netherlands to reach London. Garros then returned to France to fly once more.

Sadly, Garros was shot down and died on October 5, 1918. He was only one day away from his 30th birthday. Many people remember him today through famous places. Garros had a diverse early life before he ever took to the skies. As a child, he suffered from pneumonia and moved to Cannes to recover. To restore his health, he took up cycling and won an inter-school championship. He also enjoyed football, rugby, and tennis. At age 21, he operated a car dealership in Paris. He was a close friend of Ettore Bugatti and owned the first Garros Bugatti Type 18.

His passion for flight began in 1909 at an aviation show in Sapicourt. He started his career flying a Demoiselle monoplane. This aircraft was so lightweight that it only flew well with a very small pilot. Garros earned his Ae.C.F. license number 147 in July 1910. He later graduated to flying Blériot XI monoplanes and entered several European air races. He even achieved second place in the Circuit of Europe, which flew from Paris to London and back to Paris.

Garros was a record-breaking pilot who pushed the limits of altitude and distance. In 1912, he regained the altitude record by flying to a height of 5,000 meters. On September 23, 1913, he achieved fame by flying across the Mediterranean Sea. He flew a Morane-Saulnier G from Fréjus-Saint Raphaël in France to Bizerte in Tunisia. The non-stop flight lasted nearly eight hours. During this journey, he successfully resolved two different engine malfunctions.

During World War I, Garros faced a major technical problem in combat. As a reconnaissance pilot, he struggled to hit enemy planes with a hand-held carbine. He needed a way to mount a machine gun on his plane. However, bullets would strike and destroy the aircraft's propeller. While Raymond Saulnier had worked on a synchroniser to time gun fire, it was not working well with the available guns. Garros and his mechanic, Jules Hue, developed a clever workaround.

They fitted protective steel wedges to the blades of his Morane-Saulnier G propeller. These deflector plates pushed bullets aside so the propeller would not break. This allowed Garros to achieve the first successful shoot-down of an aircraft by a fighter firing through a tractor propeller on April 1, 1915. He gained two more victories in April 1915. His invention was so significant that the Aero Club of America awarded him a medal for it in 1918.

In April 1915, a clogged fuel line forced Garros to land in German-controlled territory. He was captured and spent nearly three years in various prisoner of war camps. He was held in places like Kostrzyn nad Odrą and Mainz. On February 14, 1918, he and fellow aviator Anselme Marchal escaped. They traveled through the Netherlands to reach London before returning to France. Garros rejoined the French army to fly the SPAD S.XIII.

Garros died on October 5, 1918, when he was shot down near Vouziers, Ardennes. He was only one day away from his 30th birthday.
