His art shows a lot of feeling, which is called pathos. He used a huge range of colors in his work. Even his whites were not just one color. He used many different tones to make them look real.

Rogier likely learned to paint by working with Robert Campin. By the year 1432, he was already called a Master painter. Later, he moved to Brussels with his wife, Elisabeth. He lived from approximately 1399 or 1400 until 1464. This era is often called the age of the Flemish Primitives, or Vlaamse Primitieven. Van der Weyden was an incredibly successful artist during his lifetime. His fame reached far beyond his home in the Netherlands. His works were exported to distant places like Italy and Spain. He is widely considered the most influential Northern painter of the 15th century. He stands alongside Robert Campin and Jan van Eyck as a giant of art history.

Van der Weyden developed a unique and highly technical method of painting. He worked closely from life models to ensure great detail.

He often idealized his models, making them appear statuesque or perfect. His art is famous for its expressive pathos, which means it shows deep emotion. He used a very wide range of colors and tones. In his best paintings, he never repeated the same tone in different areas. Even his whites contained many varied shades to create realism. He often placed his models against dark, flat backgrounds to make them stand out.

His artistic output consisted of several specific types of works. He was a master of the religious triptych, which is a three-paneled painting. He also created altarpieces and many commissioned portraits. His portraits were often shown in half-length and half-profile views.

These portraits were just as sympathetic and detailed as his religious scenes. He used strong diagonal lines in his compositions. He achieved this through the shape of headdresses or the folds of heavy drapery. This technique helped give his figures a sense of life and movement.

Very little is known about his early years due to lost archives.

His family lived in Tournai, in what is now Belgium. His father, Henri de le Pasture, was a maître-coutelier, or knife manufacturer. Scholars believe Rogier may have been a pupil of Robert Campin. Records show a "Rogelet de le Pasture" entered Campin's workshop in 1427. By 1432, he had already earned the title of "Master" painter. In 1435, he moved to Brussels with his wife, Elisabeth. It was in Brussels that he began using his famous name, Rogier van der Weyden. He was appointed the official painter to the town of Brussels, a very prestigious role.

Van der Weyden's career was marked by immense wealth and high-status connections. He served the powerful Dukes of Burgundy and the elite of the Netherlands. He also received commissions from the Medici family and the House of Este.

His reputation was so great that he was even asked to train a painter for the Duchess of Milan. Despite his wealth, he was a known philanthropist. Between 1455 and 1457, he served as an administrator for a charitable foundation in Brussels. He also gave money to help the poor. His success allowed him to live a very prosperous life in the capital.

Some of his paintings have incredible stories of survival. One of his most famous works is The Descent from the Cross.

This painting was once sent to the King of Spain. While it was traveling by sea, the ship sank. Because of its careful packaging, the painting floated and arrived without much damage. Another major work is the Miraflores Altarpiece. This was likely commissioned by King Juan II of Castile in 1445. Historians also point to the Beaune Altarpiece as a significant example of his skill. These works help prove his mastery of color and human emotion.

It is often difficult for historians to correctly attribute every painting to him. This is because many records were destroyed in 1695 and again in 1940. For many years, scholars confused his identity with other artists. Some thought there were two different painters named Rogier van der Weyden. Others mistakenly attributed works by Robert Campin to him. Modern experts have worked hard to clear up these errors. They now use stylistic evidence to identify his true hand. Today, his legacy is firmly established in the history of European art.
