A large coral reef grows in the water all around the island. This reef creates a lagoon where eighteen small islets sit. The coral here is very special because it grows all by itself. It does not get new coral from other places.

History tells us that people visited these islands long ago. Arabs are known to have visited the Mascarene Islands starting in the 10th century. Later, a Portuguese explorer named Diogo Rodrigues found the island in 1528. The island has had many different names on old maps. In 1691, a group of people tried to start a farm there. They found many tortoises, birds, and fish on the island. Later, the French and the British both held control of the island.

It sits to the east of the Republic of Mauritius. The island is part of the Mascarene Islands group. This group also includes Mauritius and the island of Réunion. While it is part of the sovereignty of Mauritius, it has its own local government. This system was established on 12 October 2002. The island is governed by the Rodrigues Regional Assembly. The capital city of this island is Port Mathurin.

The physical landscape of Rodrigues is shaped by volcanic activity. The island is approximately 1.5 million years old. It rises from a ridge along the Mascarene Plateau. A tectonic feature called the Rodrigues Triple Point lies on the nearby sea floor. The island's shape resembles the back of a whale. It features a central spine with deep valleys. The highest point is Mont Limon, which reaches 385 meters. Unlike its neighbors, Rodrigues has extensive limestone deposits and caves.

A large fringing reef surrounds the entire island. This reef creates a lagoon that contains eighteen small islets. The coral ecosystem here is unique because it is self-seeding. It does not receive coral zooplankton from other locations. This isolation results in a species-poor but highly adapted ecosystem. Specific species of coral and damselfish live only on these reefs. Many types of crustaceans are also unique to this area.

History shows that many different groups have interacted with the island. Arab travelers visited the Mascarene Islands as early as the 10th century. Portuguese explorer Diogo Rodrigues arrived in 1528. He was working under the direction of Pedro Mascarenhas. Early maps used many different names for the island. Some French sources even called it Île Marianne. In 1691, François Leguat and seven companions attempted to start a farming colony. They found an abundance of tortoises, birds, and seafood.

Control of the island shifted between different European powers. The French established a permanent settlement in 1735. They brought African slaves to develop farming and stock-breeding. In 1809, British troops took possession of the island after a brief battle. Slavery was eventually abolished in 1834. In 1883, the island experienced a very famous event. The sound of the Krakatoa volcano eruption was heard on Rodrigues. This was the furthest point from the explosion where the sound was heard. The noise was described as the roar of heavy guns.

The climate on Rodrigues is a mild tropical maritime climate. It is shaped by persistent trade winds that blow all year. The island has two distinct seasons. The mean summer temperature is 27.3 °C. The mean winter temperature is about 23.7 °C. The temperature difference between seasons is only 3.6 °C. January to March are the hottest months. February is the wettest month, while September and October are the driest. Cyclones can occur between November and April. Rodrigues is often hit by cyclones more frequently than Mauritius.

Biodiversity on the island has changed significantly over time. Many endemic species have been lost since the 17th century. The island once had giant tortoises and the Rodrigues solitaire bird. The solitaire was a giant flightless pigeon related to the dodo. Today, some species are still fighting for survival. The Rodrigues flying fox is an endangered bat. Two bird species, the Rodrigues fody and the Rodrigues warbler, are near threatened.

Nature reserves like Grande Montagne help protect these remaining animals.

Modern life on Rodrigues is organized through specific political and economic structures. The island is divided into 14 municipalities or zones. The population was estimated at 43,650 in late 2022. Most inhabitants are of African descent. The economy relies on fishing, farming, and handicrafts. The tourism sector is also developing. The Regional Assembly consists of 18 members. They meet every week to manage the budget and make laws.
