McDowall showed early talent by winning an acting prize in a school play at age nine. He appeared in British films like I See Ice and Hey! Hey! USA in 1938. After World War II began, his mother moved him and his sister, Virginia, to the United States. He became a naturalized U.S. citizen on December 9, 1949. He lived in the United States for the rest of his life.
McDowall's early American success was driven by major film studios. In 1941, he starred in How Green Was My Valley. This film won the Academy Award for Best Picture. His role as Huw Morgan made him a household name. He also starred in My Friend Flicka in 1942 and Lassie Come Home in 1943. 
As he matured, McDowall expanded into theater and television. He moved to New York City to focus on live television drama. He found significant success on Broadway. He performed in the hit play No Time for Sergeants from 1955 to 1957. He also won a Tony Award for his role in The Fighting Cock in 1960.
McDowall is perhaps most famous for his work in science fiction. He played Cornelius in the Planet of the Apes films from 1968 to 1973. He later returned to the franchise as Caesar in Conquest of the Planet of the Apes.
Beyond acting, McDowall was a dedicated leader in the film community. He served on the board of governors for the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. He held the position of chairman for the Actors' Branch for five terms. He was also the president of the Academy Foundation in 1998. 
His life was marked by both professional honors and personal challenges. In 1960, he received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. He was also honored with a rose garden at a motion picture retirement home. In 1974, the FBI investigated his film collection for copyright issues, but no charges were filed. He faced personal loss during a relationship with actor Montgomery Clift. McDowall died of pancreatic cancer on October 3, 1998, at age 70. His ashes were scattered into the Pacific Ocean. He left behind a massive legacy of art and service.
