In 1820, an expedition led by Stephen H. Long approached the mountains. Later, settlers arrived in the mid-1800s. Some people even came to look for gold and silver in the 1870s. They built small towns like Lulu City and Gaskill. Eventually, the government decided to protect the land. President Woodrow Wilson signed the law to create the park on January 26, 1915.
The park has many high points and beautiful sights. Longs Peak is the highest point in the park. There are sixty mountain peaks that are over 13,000 feet high.

Human history in this area spans many different eras. Paleo-Indians once traveled near Trail Ridge Road to hunt. Later, the Ute and Arapaho people used the land for camping. In 1820, the Long Expedition approached the Rockies via the Platte River. Settlers arrived in the mid-1800s and displaced Native Americans by 1878. Prospectors even built small towns like Lulu City to find gold and silver. The mining boom ended by 1883 when miners left their claims. Finally, leaders like Enos Mills helped create the official national park. President Woodrow Wilson signed the act on January 26, 1915.
Today, the park is a place of great scientific interest. Since 2011, a climate change study has been underway. This project involves NASA and the National Park Service. Scientists use data to see how ecosystems react to land use changes. They have noted that average annual temperatures have risen by about 2 °F. This warming causes snow to melt earlier in the year. It also leads to drier summers and longer fire seasons.
Visitors can explore the park through many different ways. There are 150 lakes and about 95 miles of trails.
