Campin used a special way to make his paintings look life-like. Before him, many artists used egg-based paints called tempera. Campin was one of the first to use oil-based colors instead. This new method allowed for much brighter and richer colors. He used light and shade to make his figures look strong. This technique helped him show rounded shapes and deep details. By using these oils, he could create very realistic scenes.

Historians have spent many years studying who Campin really was. For a long time, some of his works were linked to a person called the "Master of Flémalle." This name came from three religious panels once thought to be from an abbey in Flémalle. Now, most scholars believe the Master of Flémalle was actually Robert Campin. It is hard to be certain because he did not sign his name. We know he was a successful painter by the early 1400s. His fame grew as he worked in the city of Tournai.

He was a primary figure in the development of early Netherlandish painting. This style was a vital part of the Northern Renaissance. Alongside Jan van Eyck, Campin helped move art toward a new level of realism. He focused on observing the physical world with intense accuracy. His work allowed viewers to feel a closer connection to religious subjects through lifelike imagery. Although he was a highly successful artist, he did not sign his works. This makes his exact identity a subject of deep study for historians.

Campin achieved his realistic style through technical innovation in his painting methods. Before his time, many artists used tempera, which is a paint made with egg yolks. Campin was among the first to experiment with oil-based colors instead. This shift to oil allowed for much more brilliance and depth in color. He used this medium to model light and shade across his compositions. This technique created strong, rounded characters and complex perspectives. By mastering these oils, he could capture the textures of the real world.

Identifying Campin's specific works has been a complex task for scholars. For many years, a group of paintings was attributed to an anonymous artist called the "Master of Flémalle." This name was created in the 19th century after three religious panels were found. These panels were thought to have come from a monastery in Flémalle. However, historians have since discovered that no such abbey existed. Today, most scholars believe the Master of Flémalle and Robert Campin are the same person. This conclusion is based on the style of the paintings and his known workshop.

Campin's life was centered in the city of Tournai, located in modern-day Belgium. He was active as a master painter there as early as 1406. By 1410, he had earned full citizenship in the city. He was a prominent member of the guild of goldsmiths and painters. In fact, he served as the deputy dean of this guild in 1423, 1424, and 1425. He even represented the guild on the city council in 1427. His professional success allowed him to own several houses and invest in city bonds.

Beyond his own brush, Campin ran a large and profitable workshop. He trained several apprentices who would go on to become famous masters themselves. Among them were Jacques Daret and Rogelet de la Pasture. Most historians believe Rogelet de la Pasture was actually the famous Rogier van der Weyden. Between 1426 and 1428, Campin employed four different apprentices in his studio. These men included Haquin de Blandain and Willemet. The success of his students shows the high quality of the training provided in his workshop.

Campin's personal life included both high status and significant challenges. He was married to Ysabel de Stocquain, and the couple had no children. In 1432, he faced legal trouble regarding an affair with a woman named Laurence Polette. This led to a sentence of banishment for one year. However, Margaret of Burgundy intervened on his behalf. Her help reduced his punishment to a simple fine. Despite this legal difficulty, Campin maintained his public standing and continued to work until his death in 1444.
