His family was wealthy, and he had six siblings. His mother was named Śārī, which gave him his later name, Śāriputra. This name translates to "son of Śāri." As a young man, he became a spiritual wanderer with his friend Kolita. They studied under various teachers, including Sañjaya Vairatiputra. Eventually, they encountered the Buddha and ordained as monks.

Two weeks after his ordination, Śāriputra attained enlightenment as an arhat.

As a chief disciple, Śāriputra performed many leadership duties within the Sangha. The Sangha is the community of Buddhist monks. He was responsible for looking after the monks and their needs. He also assigned specific objects of meditation to them. Furthermore, he clarified complex points of Buddhist doctrine. He was the very first disciple whom the Buddha permitted to ordain other monks. Because of his immense teaching ability, he earned the title "General of the Dharma." This title, Dharmasenāpati, reflects his role in organizing and spreading the teachings.

Buddhist tradition suggests that the appointment of chief disciples follows a specific pattern. According to the Buddhavaṃsa, every Buddha selects two chief male and two chief female disciples. This pattern helps balance different responsibilities based on specific skills. For Gautama Buddha, the chief male disciples were Śāriputra and Maudgalyāyana. The chief female disciples were Kṣemā and Uppalavanna. Scholars like Nyanaponika Thera note that this selection ensures the community is well-led. Śāriputra was foremost in wisdom, while Maudgalyāyana was foremost in psychic powers.

There is also a deep history regarding the connection between Śāriputra and Maudgalyāyana. The Pāli Canon tells of a past life involving a man named Sarada. Sarada was a wealthy person who gave away his riches to become an ascetic. He heard a sermon from the past Buddha, Anomadassī. This encounter inspired him to resolve to become a chief disciple of a future Buddha. He made this wish in front of Anomadassī Buddha. His friend, Sirivaddhana, made a similar wish to be the second chief disciple. These two friends spent many lifetimes performing good deeds. They were eventually reborn as Śāriputra and Maudgalyāyana to fulfill those ancient aspirations.

Śāriputra's death and his legacy are also recorded in sacred texts. He passed away in his hometown shortly before the Buddha died. After his cremation, his relics were enshrined at the Jetavana Monastery.

In the Theravada tradition, Śāriputra is held in extremely high regard. Some followers view his status as being close to a second Buddha. His wisdom remains a cornerstone of Buddhist study and practice.

In Buddhist art, Śāriputra is depicted in very specific ways. He is almost always shown alongside the Buddha. By tradition, he is usually positioned to the Buddha's right hand side.
