The initial system consisted of only five stations on Line 1: Praça Onze, Central, Presidente Vargas, Cinelândia, and Glória. At the start, the metro only operated from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM. It used just four trains, each consisting of four cars, with an eight-minute interval between them. Despite this small scale, the system was an immediate success. In its first ten days, it transported over 500,000 people. This averaged out to 60,000 passengers every single day.

Over the decades, the management and physical reach of the network have changed significantly.

In 1998, the operation and maintenance of the system were contracted to Metrô Rio through a lease. This lease was later renewed in 2007 and extended again in 2025 until the year 2048. This extension was made in exchange for finishing the construction of Gávea Station. The system has also seen shifts in ownership, such as when Mubadala acquired majority control of Metrô Rio in 2021. These administrative changes often coincide with efforts to expand the tracks and buy new trains.

The metro also plays a role in the city's social and cultural identity through its naming and service.
