Michels became famous for a style called "Total Football."

In this system, players do not stay in one spot. Any player can become a forward, midfielder, or defender. This works because the players switch positions constantly. They use spatial awareness to keep the team organized. This movement helps the team create and use space. It also uses "pressing" to win the ball back quickly. This style helped break older, more defensive ways of playing.

His journey began in Amsterdam near the Olympic Stadium.

On his ninth birthday in 1937, he received football boots and an Ajax jersey. He joined Ajax as a junior member in 1940. His playing career was interrupted by World War II and a famine. He later joined the Ajax first team in 1946. In his very first game, he scored five goals. He played 264 league matches for Ajax before an injury stopped him in 1958.

As a coach, Michels achieved many great things.

He led Ajax to three consecutive European Cups starting in 1971. He also coached Barcelona to a Spanish league title in 1974. Michels led the Netherlands national team during four different times. In 1974, he took them to the World Cup final in West Germany. Later, he led them to win the UEFA Euro 1988 tournament. This was the first major tournament win for the Dutch team.

Michels's ideas still link to how modern football is played. His Total Football style changed the focus of the game. It moved the sport away from defensive styles like "Catenaccio." This old Italian style relied on marking single players closely. Because Michels's players moved so much, those old tactics failed. Even new systems like "zona mista" were created to counter him. His legacy lives on in every team that uses space.

He is widely regarded as one of the greatest managers in the history of the sport. Many prestigious organizations have honored his massive impact on football. FIFA named him Coach of the Century in 1999. In 2007, The Times called him the greatest post-war football coach. Finally, in 2019, France Football named him the greatest coach in football history. His career changed the fundamental way teams approach the game.

Michels is most famous for inventing "Total Football" (Totaalvoetbal) during the 1970s.

This tactical system relies on extreme fluidity and the use of space. In this style, no outfield player is fixed in a single role. Any player can assume the role of a forward, midfielder, or defender at any time. This movement requires high levels of spatial awareness from every player. They must know exactly where to run and when to stand still. The system also uses "pressing" to win the ball back and put opponents under pressure. Michels often used a 4–3–3 formation to organize this complex movement.

One key part of his system involved the use of the "offside trap." This tactic helps a defense catch opponents in an illegal position. He also used players like Johan Cruyff to exploit the opposition. While Cruyff was often a centre forward, Michels encouraged him to roam freely. This allowed Cruyff to use his creativity to create space and chances. This approach is often compared to the modern "false 9" position. By switching positions constantly, the team ensured that tactical roles were always filled. This fluidity made it very difficult for opponents to use traditional marking strategies.

On his ninth birthday in 1937, he received football boots and an Ajax jersey. He became a junior member of Ajax in 1940. However, World War II and the Dutch famine of 1944–45 delayed his career. He joined the Ajax first team in 1946 to replace Han Lambregt. In his debut match, he scored five goals as Ajax beat ADO 8–3. He played 264 league matches for Ajax and scored 122 goals. A back injury forced him to end his playing career in 1958.

As a coach, Michels achieved unprecedented success with both clubs and nations.

He returned to Ajax as head coach in 1965. He led them to four national championships and three KNVB Cups in six years. Most notably, he managed Ajax to three consecutive European Cups starting in 1971. He also moved to Barcelona and won the Primera División title in 1974. Michels served as the Netherlands national coach during four separate periods. He led the Dutch team to the 1974 FIFA World Cup final. He also guided them to victory in the 1988 UEFA European Championship.

His success with the Netherlands in 1988 was a major moment for Dutch football.

After losing their first group match, the team defeated England and Ireland to reach the semi-finals. The semi-final against West Germany was seen as a chance for revenge for the 1974 loss. Marco van Basten scored in the 89th minute to win the game. The Netherlands then won the final against the Soviet Union. Ruud Gullit scored a header and Van Basten scored a famous volley. This was the national team's first major tournament win.

Total Football also fundamentally changed the history of football tactics.

It led to the decline of "Catenaccio," a defensive Italian system. Catenaccio relied on heavy man-marking and counter-attacking. Because Michels's players switched positions so often, man-marking became ineffective. This caused Italian coaches to create new systems like "zona mista." This "mixed zone" style combined man-marking with zonal defense to counter Total Football. Michels's legacy remains visible in how modern teams manage space and player movement today.
