The Ring of Fire is a massive tectonic belt that encircles most of the Pacific Ocean. It is also known by names like the Circum-Pacific belt or the Rim of Fire. This zone is defined by intense geological activity, specifically earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. It contains between 750 and 915 active or dormant volcanoes. This represents about two-thirds of the entire world's total volcanic count.
The primary mechanism driving this activity is a process called subduction. Subduction occurs at convergent boundaries, where tectonic plates move toward each other. When these plates meet, one plate is forced downward into the Earth's interior. This process creates deep oceanic trenches along the edge of the plate. 
The Ring of Fire features several distinct types of volcanoes. Many of the volcanoes that rise above sea level are stratovolcanoes. Mount St. Helens is a famous example of a stratovolcano. These mountains are built by alternating layers of explosive tephra and effusive lava flows. The lava at these volcanoes is often andesite or basaltic andesite. Other types of volcanoes exist within the belt as well. Some are subaerial shield volcanoes, such as Plosky Tolbachik. Others are submarine seamounts, which are volcanoes located deep under the ocean. 
Geologists have studied these patterns for centuries to understand Earth's history. In ancient Greek and Roman times, people believed volcanoes were caused by fires burning inside the Earth. This old idea is why we still use the word "fire" in the name today. In 1825, the volcanologist G. P. Scrope described the volcanic chains around the Pacific. By 1912, geologist Patrick Marshall introduced the term "Andesite Line" to describe different lava types in the southwest Pacific.
The configuration of these plates has changed significantly over millions of years. The Ring of Fire has existed for more than 35 million years. However, subduction has been happening in certain areas for much longer. For instance, subduction has been occurring at the South American coast since the Jurassic Period, over 145 million years ago. 
Different regions within the belt are shaped by different plate interactions. In South America, the Antarctic, Nazca, and Cocos plates all subduct beneath the South American plate. In the western Pacific, the process is more complex with many smaller plates. The Philippine plate subducts beneath the Eurasian plate. The Pacific plate also subducts beneath the Aleutian Islands arc.
Understanding the Ring of Fire helps scientists track the Earth's most powerful forces. The belt is a massive system of energy and movement. It links the deep interior of the planet to the surface we live on. By studying the depth of subducted slabs, scientists can map the movement of the crust.
