The sickness was caused by a virus. This virus spread through the air. It also spread if animals drank dirty water. Animals could catch it by touching each other. 
Sick animals had many symptoms. They had a fever and lost their appetite. They also got sores in their mouths. Many animals died very quickly. In some groups, almost every animal died.

In June 2011, the United Nations announced that rinderpest was officially eradicated. Eradicated means the disease has been wiped out everywhere.

As the infection progressed, more severe symptoms emerged. Irregular erosions, or sores, appeared in the mouth, the nose lining, and the genital tract. Animals also experienced acute diarrhea, which was often preceded by constipation. Most animals died within 6 to 12 days after these symptoms first manifested. Because of this timeline, outbreaks could spread rapidly through herds. 
Human history is full of attempts to control these outbreaks. In the 18th century, Europe faced several long panzootics, which are large-scale animal epidemics. Responses varied by country. The Dutch and Germans used quarantines and strict burial practices. In England and parts of Italy, authorities chose to slaughter infected animals. In the Austrian Netherlands, officials used inspections and provided compensation to owners. 
Early efforts to use inoculation saw mixed results. In the 1700s, some doctors thought rinderpest was similar to smallpox. While some trials failed or caused more disease circulation, others provided breakthroughs. A Dutch farmer named Geert Reinders worked with Wijnold Munniks to improve methods. Reinders focused on inoculating calves using maternally derived immunity. Between 1777 and 1781, his method resulted in an 89 percent survival rate. This was much higher than the 29 percent survival rate seen from natural infection.
In the 19th century, massive outbreaks continued to challenge nations. In 1865, a major outbreak hit the British Isles for three years. The British government ordered the slaughter of affected cattle. By May 1867, approximately 75,000 cattle had been slaughtered. This was a massive economic loss, with cattle valued at about £10 per head at the time. 
Ultimately, rinderpest was defeated through global cooperation. A worldwide eradication campaign began in the mid-20th century. The last confirmed case was diagnosed in 2001. In 2010, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations announced that field activities were ending. In June 2011, rinderpest was formally declared eradicated. It is only the second disease in history to be completely wiped out, following smallpox.
