His life was defined by the Wars of the Roses. These were fights between the House of Lancaster and the House of York.
Warwick earned the nickname "Kingmaker" because of the choices he made.
This change did not last very long for Warwick.
Richard Neville was a central figure in 15th-century English history.
Warwick's immense wealth resulted from strategic marriages and inheritances. He was born on 22 November 1428 to Richard Neville, 5th Earl of Salisbury. At age eight, he married Lady Anne Beauchamp in 1436. This marriage made him the heir to the Earldom of Warwick. He also gained parts of the Montague, Beauchamp, and Despenser inheritances. Later, when Anne's daughter died in 1449, he became Earl of Warwick *jure uxoris*. This Latin term means "by right of his wife."
His political career was shaped by intense disputes over land and power. Originally, Warwick supported King Henry VI of the House of Lancaster. However, a territorial conflict arose with Edmund Beaufort, Duke of Somerset. Somerset was a favorite of the King and Queen Margaret. This dispute drove Warwick to collaborate with Richard, Duke of York. In 1453, Somerset was granted the lordship of Glamorgan. This was land that Warwick had previously held. This tension turned political disagreement into the Wars of the Roses.
Warwick gained a vital power base through the post of Captain of Calais. Calais was a town in France conquered by England in 1347. It was a strategically important location for the English crown. Most importantly, it housed England's largest standing army.
The conflict between the Houses of York and Lancaster escalated through several battles. In 1455, Yorkist forces clashed with the King's forces at St Albans. This brief battle resulted in the capture of Henry VI. Later, in 1460, the Yorkist side saw a major shift. Following the Battle of Wakefield, where the Duke of York was killed, Warwick helped place Edward, Earl of March, on the throne. Edward became King Edward IV in 1461. This victory followed the massive and bloody Battle of Towton. Warwick helped secure the north for the new Yorkist king.
Despite their early success, the relationship between Warwick and Edward IV collapsed. They disagreed over foreign policy and the King's marriage. Edward chose to marry Elizabeth Woodville, which upset Warwick.
Warwick's life ended during a final attempt to reclaim power. In 1471, he faced King Edward IV at the Battle of Barnet.
