He was born on October 1, 1930, in a large redbrick house in Limerick. His family was quite big, with eight children in total. As a young man, Richard was a very talented rugby player. He played for teams like Garryowen and Crescent College. Sadly, he had to stop playing sports after he caught tuberculosis. Even after he stopped playing, he remained a huge fan of rugby matches. He often went to see the Munster and Young Munster teams play.
