He also practiced falconry, which is the sport of hunting with birds. Burton often broke the rules of the college. He once challenged a fellow student to a duel. He also attended a forbidden horse race in April 1842. Because of these actions, the college permanently expelled him.
After leaving Oxford, Burton joined the Bombay Army in 1842. He served as an officer for eighteen years. During this time, he was stationed in India, specifically in Gujarat. He earned the nickname "Ruffian Dick" due to his ferocity in combat. He was known for fighting many enemies in single combat. While in India, his linguistic skills grew even further. He learned Persian, Arabic, Hindustani, Gujarati, Punjabi, Sindhi, Saraiki, and Marathi. He even attempted to learn the language of monkeys by keeping them as pets.
Burton's most famous explorations involved searching for the source of the Nile River. He led an expedition to the East African coast alongside John Hanning Speke. During this journey, Burton became the first known European to see Lake Tanganyika. 


As a writer, Burton was incredibly productive and studied many complex subjects. He translated famous works like "One Thousand and One Nights" and "The Perfumed Garden." He also published the "Kama Sutra" in English. His academic writing covered diverse topics such as ethnography and human behavior. He wrote about specialized interests like fencing, falconry, and sexual practices. His books were meant to provide deep insight into different ways of life. He was considered a very erudite, or highly learned, author.
Richard Burton's life connected many different fields of study and travel. His military service, linguistic talents, and academic writing all worked together. He bridged the gap between European society and the cultures of Asia and Africa. He died on October 20, 1890. His tomb is located in Mortlake, near London. Visitors can see the detailed inscriptions on his grave.
