The economy of the region is very strong. It has the sixth-largest economy of any European region. The per capita GDP is approximately €31,231, which is higher than the French average. The average income is about €35,910. This prosperity comes from many different sectors. For example, the "Triangle of Lyon, Saint-Étienne, and Grenoble" contributes €145 billion to the GDP. If you add Valence, the total is nearly €150 billion. Lyon alone has a Gross Metropolitan Product of about €85 billion.
Industry and technology are major drivers of growth. In Grenoble, there are 62,300 jobs in high-tech sectors. This is supported by areas like the Polygone Scientifique and Inovallée. Other industries include mechanical engineering in Annecy and precision machining in Cluses. In the past, coal mining was important near Saint-Étienne, but it declined after the 1970s. The region is also known for its tourism. It has hosted the Winter Olympics three times: in 1924, 1968, and 1992.
Culture and food are also central to the region's identity. Lyon is a famous center for gastronomy. It is classified by UNESCO as a World Heritage site.
