Many people wanted change.

Many people wanted change in their lands.
It started with strikes in Poland. A group called Solidarity helped people stand up. They won an election to lead.
Then, many other places joined in. People in Hungary and Germany had big protests. They even took down the Berlin Wall.
In some places, people used force. This was very hard for them. But most changes were peaceful.
These big events changed the whole world. New countries were born from the old ones.
In 1989, many people wanted more freedom. This wave of change is called the Revolutions of 1989.
It began with strikes in Poland. A group called Solidarity helped workers stand up. They grew to have 10 million members.
In 1989, Poland held elections. Solidarity won a huge victory. This led to a peaceful change in government. In Hungary, leaders began to open borders.
Many people joined in the protests. In East Germany, crowds marched in the streets. They took down the Berlin Wall in November 1989.
Most changes were peaceful. However, Romania was different. People there used force to change their government.
These events changed the world. The Soviet Union broke apart into new countries. This marked the end of the Cold War.
The Revolutions of 1989 changed how many people lived. This wave of change is also called the Fall of Communism.

Change happened through many different ways. Many people used civil resistance to show they wanted new rules. This means they used protests and strikes to demand change. In most places, these changes were peaceful.

These events started with workers in Poland.
Other countries soon followed the lead of Poland. Hungary held talks to change its government. In August 1989, people in the Baltic states joined together. Over a quarter of the population formed the Baltic Way. They used a human chain to protest the Soviet Union.

The Soviet Union also went through big changes. Mikhail Gorbachev became the leader in 1985. He started policies called glasnost and perestroika. These policies meant more openness and economic changes. Eventually, the Soviet Union dissolved in December 1991.
The Revolutions of 1989, often called the Fall of Communism, changed the world's political map.

Much of this change came from civil resistance. Civil resistance means people use organized protests to oppose one-party rule. Many nations used strikes and demonstrations to pressure their leaders. In most places, these transitions were peaceful. However, Romania was an exception to this pattern. In Romania, citizens and opposition forces used violence to overthrow the regime. This occurred because Romania was politically isolated from the rest of the Eastern Bloc.
The movement began with labor unrest in Poland. In 1980, a massive general strike led to the August Agreements. This allowed the creation of Solidarity. Solidarity was the first independent trade union in the Eastern Bloc. It eventually reached a peak membership of 10 million people.
Other nations followed the example set by Poland. Hungary organized round table talks to change its government. Hungary also began dismantling its section of the Iron Curtain. In August 1989, a massive protest called the Baltic Way occurred. Over a quarter of the Baltic states' population formed a human chain. They did this to protest the Soviet Union's occupation.

Internal reforms in the Soviet Union also played a role. Mikhail Gorbachev became the Soviet leader in 1985. He introduced a policy called glasnost, which means openness. He also introduced perestroika, which means economic restructuring. These reforms were meant to fix a declining economy. The Soviet economy was strained by military costs and the KGB. The 1986 Chernobyl disaster also had massive political effects. The cost of containment was 18 billion roubles. This disaster increased the importance of the glasnost policy.
As the Soviet Union changed, it eventually dissolved in December 1991.
The impact of these revolutions reached far beyond Europe. In China, protests in Tiananmen Square failed to change the government. However, the images from these protests influenced the rest of the world. In Africa, eight countries abandoned communism between 1989 and 1993. These included Ethiopia, Angola, and Mozambique. In South America, a political movement called the "pink tide" began in Venezuela in 1999. The global political landscape was permanently altered by these shifts.
