There are many interesting facts about their size and variety. In southern Sumatra, scientists studied over a thousand wild snakes. These snakes usually grow between 3 and 7 meters long.

The reticulated python, scientifically named *Malayopython reticulatus*, is a massive snake species. It is native to South and Southeast Asia. This reptile holds the title of the world's longest snake. It is also the third heaviest snake on Earth. Only the green anaconda and the Burmese python are heavier.

Because it lives in so many different places, it is listed as "least concern" on the IUCN Red List. This means the species is not currently at risk of extinction. However, it remains one of the most economically important reptiles globally. People hunt them for their skin, for traditional medicine, or to sell them as pets.

This snake uses a specific hunting method called constriction. It is an ambush predator, which means it waits for prey to come to it. The python stays very still until a target is within striking range. Once it strikes, it uses its powerful coils to squeeze the prey. This process kills the animal so the snake can eat it. Their diet primarily consists of mammals and occasionally birds.

He based this on specific traits like a dark mid-dorsal line and red or orange irises. However, most taxonomists ignore this name because it lacked scientific rigor. In 2014, R. Graham Reynolds and colleagues proposed the name *Malayopython*. This name is now recognized by the Reptile Database. It is used for this species and the Timor python.

There are different versions of this snake called subspecies. Three main subspecies have been proposed by researchers. The Asian reticulated python, *M. r. reticulatus*, is the most common. There are also two "dwarf" subspecies found on specific islands. The Kayaudi reticulated python lives on Tanahjampea. The Selayer reticulated python lives on Selayar Island and nearby Sulawesi.

These dwarf versions are much shorter than the standard species. Some populations on the Sangihe Islands might be another subspecies, but they are not yet formally described.

Measuring these snakes is very difficult due to their immense size. In southern Sumatra, a study of over 1,000 wild pythons found lengths between 3 and 7 meters.
