Destination resorts represent a specific category of large-scale facilities. A destination resort possesses enough internal attractions that guests do not need to leave the property. These attractions might include amusement parks, scenic sites, or gaming facilities. Because they provide everything in one place, the quality of food and lodging is often higher than typical local options. Some destination resorts are exceptionally large, known as megaresorts, such as those found on the Las Vegas Strip.

In Singapore, the term "integrated resort" is used as a euphemism for destination resorts based around casinos.

All-inclusive resorts operate on a specific financial model. Guests pay a single fixed price that covers most or all of their expenses. This price typically includes lodging, unlimited food, and various drinks. It often covers gratuities, sports, and entertainment as well. While these resorts are found globally, they tend to be located in warmer regions. Notable examples include brands like Club Med, Sandals Resorts, and Beaches Resorts.

The all-inclusive model originated with Club Med, which was founded by the Belgian Gérard Blitz.

All-inclusive amenities have seen significant changes in the United States. In 1961, over half of the resorts in the country offered such plans. By 2007, this number had decreased to less than a tenth. Many all-inclusive properties are also designed for specific demographics. Some cater exclusively to adults or couples. Others are geared toward families by providing water parks, game rooms, and craft centers. These specialized environments also make them popular locations for destination weddings.

Resorts can also be built around specific activities or wellness. Spa resorts are residential facilities that provide individual services for spa goers. Historically, many were built near natural hot springs or mineral water sources. They often offer fitness activities and healthy diet programs. Golf resorts provide access to golf courses, clubhouses, and include packages for meals and cart fees. Even new trends exist, such as surf resorts. These use artificial surfing facilities to cater to the surfing community.

History shows that humans have sought out resorts for thousands of years. Baiae, Italy, was a famous resort in the ancient world. The island of Capri has also attracted visitors since Roman times. In the early 20th century, Monte Ne in Arkansas was a major destination. At its peak, it hosted more than 10,000 visitors annually. The site featured Missouri Row and Oklahoma Row, which were the largest log buildings in the world.

Tragically, Monte Ne closed in the 1930s and was submerged in Beaver Lake during the 1960s.

Timeshare resorts are a significant part of the modern industry. In the United States, there are more than 1,500 such resorts. These represent 198,000 residences and nearly 9 million owners. On average, these owners pay $880 per year in maintenance fees. Interestingly, a reported 16% of these residences have become vacation rentals. This shows how ownership models continue to evolve within the travel sector.

Resorts also define the character of entire geographic areas. Resort towns are places where tourism is a major part of local activity. Seaside resorts are located on a coast, such as Miami Beach.

Inland resorts can include mountain or ski resorts. In Europe and North America, ski resorts often consist of entire villages. These towns provide essential support services like ski schools and equipment rentals. Other resorts exist on islands, such as the archipelagoes in the Maldives.
