The reptile lineage has deep roots in Earth's history. The earliest known members appeared during the late Carboniferous period. They evolved from advanced reptiliomorph tetrapods adapted for life on land. During the Permian period, two major lineages diverged: Archosauromorpha and Lepidosauromorpha. Archosauromorpha includes crocodilians and birds, while Lepidosauromorpha includes lizards and snakes. 
Modern reptiles show incredible variety in size and habitat. They inhabit every continent except Antarctica. The size range is extreme, from the tiny Jaragua dwarf gecko to the massive saltwater crocodile. 
Today, modern cladistic taxonomy has changed how we view the reptile family tree. Traditional taxonomy viewed reptiles as a single class, but cladistics shows this group is paraphyletic. This means the traditional group excludes descendants that are now classified elsewhere. For example, birds are the only surviving members of the Dinosauria clade. Genetic evidence shows birds are more closely related to crocodilians than to other living reptiles.
