Its name actually means "people's currency." While renminbi is the formal name, most people use the word yuan to talk about it. One yuan is the main unit of this money. You can break one yuan into smaller pieces. There are 10 jiao in one yuan. Then, each jiao can be split into 10 fen.

In daily life, people often use different words. They might say "kuai" instead of yuan or "mao" instead of jiao. This is just a common way to speak.

Learning how the value of money works is quite interesting. For a long time, the value of the renminbi was tied to the US dollar. This is called being "pegged" to another currency. As China began to trade more with the world, the government changed how the value worked. They wanted to help Chinese industries stay competitive. Since 2006, the exchange rate has been allowed to float. This means it moves within a small range around a set base rate.

History shows that money in China has changed many times. Long ago, people used silver dollars from Spanish America. In 1889, China introduced the silver dragon dollar. Later, in 1935, the silver standard was stopped. The renminbi itself was introduced in December 1948. The People's Bank of China issued it at that time. At first, it was only paper money. It replaced many other types of money used in different areas. By June 1949, it was officially called the renminbi.

There are many important facts about how the renminbi is used today. It is a very important part of global trade. As of April 2025, it is the fifth-most-traded currency in the world. In 2016, it became the first emerging market currency to join a special group at the IMF. This group uses certain currencies as reserves. The renminbi's starting weight in that group was 10.9 percent.

China also uses different codes for its money. The code CNY is used for money inside mainland China. The code CNH is used for trading outside the mainland.

Technology is also changing how people use money. In the early 2020s, China started working on a digital renminbi. Some people call this the digital yuan or e-CNY. This is a type of digital currency made by the central bank. Pilot programs began in 2020 in cities like Shenzhen and Suzhou. By 2023, people were using it for many things. They used it for public buses and for paying in shops. This digital money helps make payments easier and more modern for everyone.

The renminbi is the official currency of China. Its name translates to "people's currency." While renminbi is the formal name for the money, yuan is the name of its basic unit. This is similar to how people discuss the British pound or sterling. The renminbi is issued and managed by the People's Bank of China. Today, it is a vital part of the global economy. As of April 2025, it ranks as the fifth-most-traded currency in the world.

Understanding the units of the renminbi requires looking at its subdivisions. One yuan is divided into 10 jiao. Each jiao is further subdivided into 10 fen. In everyday Mandarin, people often use different colloquial terms. They might say "kuai" instead of yuan or "mao" instead of jiao. In written Chinese, the character for yuan usually follows the number. When international traders need to distinguish it from the Japanese yen, they use the symbol ¥ alongside the abbreviation RMB.

There are also different designations for how the currency is traded. The ISO code CNY refers to the on-shore currency. This version is used only within mainland China. It is strictly controlled by the People's Bank of China using a fixed daily exchange rate. In contrast, the code CNH refers to the off-shore renminbi. This version is traded internationally outside of the mainland. It is not subject to the same restrictions and its exchange rate is determined by the market.

The history of Chinese money involves many different systems. From the 16th to the 20th centuries, China imported many Spanish dollars. In 1889, the silver dragon dollar became the first locally minted silver dollar accepted across the Qing dynasty. In 1935, the silver standard was discontinued. This led to the creation of the Chinese yuan as a fiat currency. A fiat currency is money that is not backed by a physical commodity like gold.

The modern renminbi was introduced in December 1948. The People's Bank of China issued it to replace various other currencies. One major goal was to end the hyperinflation that had affected China. In 1955, a revaluation occurred. This set the rate at 1 new yuan for every 10,000 old yuan. By June 1949, the name "renminbi" became the official term.

China's exchange rate policy has changed significantly over time. Until 2005, the renminbi was pegged to the US dollar. This means its value was tied to the dollar's value. As China moved toward a market economy, the government changed this system. Since 2006, the rate has been allowed to float within a narrow margin. This margin is based on a basket of different world currencies. This shift helped China transition from a command economy to a market-oriented one.

The renminbi has gained massive importance in international finance. On October 1, 2016, it became the first emerging market currency in the IMF's special drawing rights basket. This basket contains currencies used for global reserves. The renminbi's initial weighting in this basket was 10.9%. The currency's importance is reflected in its trading volume. It was the 8th most traded currency in 2013. It rose to 5th place by 2015.

Technology is now shaping the future of the renminbi. In the early 2020s, China launched the digital renminbi, also known as e-CNY. This is a central bank digital currency, or CBDC. Pilot programs began in 2020 in cities like Shenzhen, Suzhou, and Chengdu. By 2023, e-CNY was used for many things. It supports public transportation, government subsidies, and retail payments. This digital system aims to make payments more resilient and support financial inclusion.
