Beyond the stethoscope, Laennec identified many other medical conditions. He gave the name cirrhosis to a liver disease because of its tawny, yellow appearance. He also coined the term melanoma to describe a type of skin cancer. He was the first to lecture on melanoma in 1804.

His work was so respected that many medical terms are still named after him. These include Laennec's cirrhosis and Laennec's thrombus. Even the famous writer Rudyard Kipling included him as a character in his fiction. His life showed that science and religious faith could exist together.

While Laennec's invention was revolutionary, it was not accepted immediately by everyone. Some doctors preferred the old ways for many years. One professor even argued that doctors should just use their ears instead of a tool. Even the founder of the American Heart Association used a silk handkerchief to listen to chests. However, the design eventually changed to the modern version. In 1851, A. Leared invented the version with two earpieces. G.P. Cammann perfected this design for commercial production in 1852.
