The history of rectification shows how technology has moved from mechanical parts to tiny silicon chips. Early radio receivers, known as crystal radios, used a "cat's whisker" of fine wire pressed against a crystal of galena (lead sulfide) to detect signals. 

Today, semiconductor technology allows for highly specialized rectifiers. For low-power needs, junction diodes or Schottky diodes are widely used. For high-power needs, such as high-voltage direct current (HVDC) power transmission, engineers use thyristors. A thyristor is a silicon-controlled rectifier that acts as a controlled switching device.
