They moved quickly along the shorelines. These people reached Australia by about 65,000 to 50,000 years ago. Some researchers think they arrived as early as 65,000 years ago. Others suggest they might have arrived at 50,000 years ago at the earliest. This large group is the main ancestor of people living outside Africa today.

Researchers find clues about these people in fossils and stone tools. In Ethiopia, the Omo-Kibish I skeleton is about 233,000 years old.

Even older fossils were found at Jebel Irhoud in Morocco. These fossils are about 315,000 years old. In Israel, fossils were found in the Qafzeh and Es-Skhul caves. These were dated to between 80,000 and 120,000 years ago. These early groups may have died out or moved back to Africa.

Our history is not just about one single group moving alone. As modern humans traveled, they met other groups called archaic humans. These included people like the Neanderthals in Europe.

The mechanism of this expansion involved several distinct waves of migration. Scientists believe these movements were driven by environmental changes, such as megadroughts in tropical Africa starting around 135,000 years ago. These droughts likely forced populations toward sea shores and across continental borders. There were at least two main dispersal routes used by early humans. The "Northern Route" traveled through the Nile Valley and the Sinai Peninsula. The "Southern Route" involved crossing the Bab-el-Mandeb strait to reach the Arabian Peninsula.

These migration routes followed different paths and timelines. The Northern Route saw early Homo sapiens reaching the Qafzeh and Es-Skhul caves in Israel between 80,000 and 120,000 years ago. However, these early groups may have become extinct or retreated back to Africa. The most significant dispersal occurred via the Southern Route approximately 70,000 to 50,000 years ago. During this time, lower sea levels due to glaciation made the Red Sea much narrower. This allowed small groups, perhaps only 150 to 1,000 people, to cross using simple rafts.

Once they crossed into the Arabian Peninsula, these humans spread rapidly. The Southern Route followers traveled along the coastlines of Asia. This rapid movement allowed them to reach Australia by roughly 65,000 to 50,000 years ago. Some researchers suggest the arrival in Australia might have been as late as 50,000 years ago. Meanwhile, a different offshoot of these humans moved into the Near East and Europe. This group settled Western Asia around 50,000 years ago and populated Europe starting about 43,000 years ago.

Archaeologists use fossils and stone tools to date these ancient journeys. In Morocco, fossils from Jebel Irhoud show a mix of modern and archaic features and date to 315,000 years ago. The Omo-Kibish I skeleton from Ethiopia is the oldest known anatomically modern human skeleton at 233,000 years old.

In the United Arab Emirates, stone tools found at Jebel Faya were dated to 127,000 years ago. These finds suggest humans were present in the region much earlier than previously thought. Such discoveries help refine our understanding of exactly when and where these migrations occurred.

Modern science has also revealed that our history is not a simple story of replacement. Genetic studies show that Homo sapiens engaged in admixture with archaic humans. Admixture is the process of different populations interbreeding and mixing their DNA. As modern humans moved into Eurasia, they met groups like the Neanderthals and Denisovans.

While most modern non-Africans descend from the single African expansion, they also carry genetic traces from these regional archaic groups. This means our ancestry is a complex blend of many different human lineages.

Understanding these migrations connects biology, geology, and archaeology. For example, the timing of the Southern Route dispersal is debated in relation to the Toba eruption. This massive volcanic event occurred between 69,000 and 77,000 years ago in Sumatra. Some evidence, like the L3 mitochondrial haplogroup, suggests humans might have left Africa a few thousand years after this eruption. Other researchers look at stone tools found under volcanic ash in India to argue for an earlier movement. By studying these connections, scientists piece together the incredible journey of our ancestors across the globe.
