While climbing habits have evolved in other palm lineages, such as the tribe Cocoseae, those species lack the spinose stems characteristic of true rattan.

Economically, rattan is one of the world's most valuable non-timber forest products. In Southeast Asia, it is traditionally used to produce wickerwork furniture, baskets, canes, woven mats, and cordage. Historically, rattan was known by various trade names depending on its origin. It was often called Manila cane or Malacca cane in international trade. The specific species used can vary based on the desired quality of the cane. For example, Calamus andamanicus is noted for producing excellent large-diameter canes.

Today, the future of rattan is facing significant challenges. The supply of these palms is rapidly threatened by two main factors: deforestation and overexploitation. Protecting these tropical forests is essential to ensuring that rattan remains a viable resource for the future.
