Raphael grew up in a city called Urbino. His father, Giovanni Santi, was a painter for the local ruler.
In 1508, Raphael moved to Rome. The Pope invited him to work at the Vatican. He painted many large works on walls. These wall paintings are called frescoes. His most famous fresco is The School of Athens. Raphael ran a very large workshop. Many helpers used his drawings to make art. He died at age 37, but he left behind much beautiful work.

His journey began in the city of Urbino.
In 1508, Raphael moved to the city of Rome.
Raphael's influence stayed strong for a very long time. After he died at age 37, his style remained a model for others. In the 18th and 19th centuries, people loved his calm and peaceful style. His art helped start a movement called Neoclassical painting. However, some later groups, like the Pre-Raphaelites, did not like his methods. Even so, his beautiful works remain famous in museums today.
Raffaello Sanzio da Urbino, known to the world as Raphael, was a premier Italian painter and architect.
Raphael's technical process often involved sophisticated layering of materials. He frequently used oil varnish as a medium to finish his paintings. To create realistic skin tones, he applied paint very thinly over the surface. In contrast, he applied paint more thickly to represent shadows and darker garments.
His career is traditionally divided into three distinct stylistic phases. The first phase consisted of his early years in the Umbria region. The second phase lasted about four years, from 1504 to 1508, while he absorbed Florentine traditions. The final phase was a triumphant twelve-year period in Rome. During this time, he worked for two different popes and their close associates. This progression shows how he moved from local styles to a grand, international mastery.
Raphael was born in the small, cultured city of Urbino in the Marche region.
In 1508, a major turning point occurred when Pope Julius II invited Raphael to Rome.
Raphael's productivity was immense despite his relatively short life. He died in 1520 at the age of 37. Even with this early death, he left behind a massive body of work. His influence was felt immediately throughout his lifetime. Outside of Rome, his reputation spread largely through collaborative printmaking. This helped ensure that his compositions and styles reached a wide audience across Europe.
His legacy has shifted through different historical movements. After his death, the influence of his rival Michelangelo became more dominant. However, in the 18th and 19th centuries, Raphael's serene and harmonious qualities were once again viewed as the highest models. The art historian Johann Joachim Winckelmann helped make his work a formative influence on Neoclassical painting. Interestingly, his techniques were later explicitly rejected by groups like the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. Today, he remains a fundamental figure in the study of Western art history.
