The 19th century brought many changes and challenges to the city. In 1831, a fire destroyed the North Carolina State House. Reconstruction began two years later using quarried gneiss. This stone was delivered by the state's first railroad. During the American Civil War, Raleigh faced many tensions. Governor Zebulon Baird Vance wanted to protect the city from destruction. He arranged for a surrender to Union forces in April 1865. This helped the city avoid the heavy damage seen in other places. 
Education and social progress became central to Raleigh's identity. The city became a place for many important institutions. Shaw University began classes in 1865. It was the first African American college in the South. Estey Hall was built to educate Black women. Leonard Medical Center was the first four-year medical school for African Americans. St. Augustine's College was also founded in 1867. In 1887, the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts was founded. This school is now known as North Carolina State University. 
In 1959, the Research Triangle Park was established. This event changed the city's economy forever. The park created thousands of jobs in science and technology. This helped Raleigh grow into a modern hub. The city also expanded its infrastructure during the 20th century. The first airport, Curtiss-Wright Flying Field, opened in 1929. Later, the Raleigh-Durham International Airport was built to serve the region. The city also developed many public spaces. William B. Umstead State Park was created by the Civilian Conservation Corps. 
Today, Raleigh is a large metropolitan area. The Raleigh–Cary metropolitan area has about 1.51 million people. The city is surrounded by many suburbs. These include Cary, Apex, and Wake Forest.
