Rilke's poetic style underwent a major transformation during his time in Paris. In the early 1900s, he worked as a secretary for the famous sculptor Auguste Rodin. Rodin taught Rilke the importance of objective observation. This training changed how Rilke approached his writing. He moved away from a subjective and incantatory style. Instead, he developed a new way of looking at the world through words. This resulted in his "thing-poems," or Neue Gedichte (New Poems). These poems focused on the essence of objects and the world around them. This shift was considered a major innovation in European literature.

His early life in Prague provided a complex foundation for his future career. Born René Karl Wilhelm Johann Josef Maria Rilke in 1875, he grew up in the Kingdom of Bohemia. His father, Josef Rilke, worked as a railway official after a military career. Rilke's childhood was often difficult due to his relationship with his mother, Sophie. She treated him like a "plaything" or a "big doll" to cope with her grief. Rilke attended a military academy in Sankt Pölten from 1886 to 1891. He left the academy because of illness and later attended a trade school in Linz. By 1895, he passed his university entrance exams and studied literature and philosophy in Prague.

Travel played a vital role in shaping Rilke's consciousness and his art. In 1897, he met the intellectual Lou Andreas-Salomé in Munich. At her suggestion, he changed his first name from René to Rainer to sound more masculine. His relationship with Salomé led to extensive trips to Russia. In 1899, he met the novelist Leo Tolstoy in Moscow. He also visited Saint Petersburg and met the family of Boris Pasternak. These cultural encounters in Bohemia and Russia became key influences on his poetry. Rilke also spent time in Italy and Spain. These travels provided the diverse settings that fueled his creative imagination.

Some of Rilke's most famous works were born from specific moments of inspiration. In 1912, while staying at Duino Castle near Trieste, he began the Duino Elegies.

He claimed to hear the first line of the poem as a voice in the wind. This project remained unfinished for ten years due to a creativity crisis. Later, Rilke moved to Switzerland to escape post-war chaos. He found a permanent home at the Château de Muzot in 1921.

In a "savage creative storm" in February 1922, he finally completed the Duino Elegies. During this same period, he also wrote the Sonnets to Orpheus, which contains 55 sonnets. These two works are considered the high points of his career.

Rilke's later years were marked by both intense creativity and personal struggle. He lived at Muzot with his partner, the painter Baladine Klossowska.

His patron, Werner Reinhart, even renovated the château so Rilke could live there rent-free. However, Rilke struggled with increasing health problems during this time. He spent many long stays at a sanatorium near Lake Geneva to manage his illness. Despite these challenges, he continued to produce important individual poems. He also wrote a collection of French poems titled Vergers, published in 1926. His ability to produce art while facing physical decline is a notable part of his legacy.

Today, Rilke's influence extends far beyond the world of traditional literature. His words are frequently quoted in television shows, books, and motion pictures. His book, Letters to a Young Poet, remains a staple for those seeking guidance on the creative life. His work connects to broader themes of psychology and spirituality. For example, his relationship with Salomé involved her knowledge of psychoanalysis. His poems are often used in modern contexts to help people manage anxiety. Rilke's life and work demonstrate how deep observation and travel can transform a person's perspective. Even after his death in 1926, his poetic voice continues to resonate globally.
