Native American tribes have held the bridge as a sacred site for centuries. The Ancient Pueblo People lived in the area long ago. Later, Paiute and Navajo groups also inhabited the region. The Navajo referred to the bridge as a "rainbow turned to stone." Today, several nations hold the site as sacred, including the Navajo, Hopi, San Juan Southern Paiute, Kaibab Paiute, and White Mesa Ute. In 1974, Navajo tribal members filed a lawsuit to protect these religious sites from rising waters. While a court ruled that water storage needs outweighed these concerns, a 1980 appeals court ruling protected religious freedom. This ensures the site remains open for religious ceremonies.
Public knowledge of the bridge grew after 1909. Two exploration parties searched for the legendary span. One was led by University of Utah Dean Byron Cummings, and the other by surveyor W. B. Douglass. They eventually combined their efforts. Paiute guides Nasja Begay and Jim Mike led the way alongside explorer John Wetherill. On August 15, the party discovered the bridge while descending Bridge Canyon.
History at the site includes the development of Rainbow Lodge in 1924. S. I. and Hubert Richardson built the lodge and facilities for mules near Navajo Mountain. Visitors could complete the 14-mile trip from the lodge to the bridge in one day by horse. The lodge saw many different operators, including Bill and Catherine Wilson. In 1942, Barry Goldwater acquired a half interest in the lodge. Although the main building burned in 1951, the site later became a trailhead for hikers. The construction of the Glen Canyon Dam in 1956 changed access significantly. As Lake Powell rose, motorboat access became much easier for thousands of visitors.
Rainbow Bridge is notable for its scale compared to other structures. While Kolob Arch and Landscape Arch in Utah have longer spans, they are classified as arches rather than bridges. Rainbow Bridge is taller than both of those competitors. However, it is not the tallest in the world. Aloba Arch in Chad reaches a greater height. Shipton's Arch in China is the world's tallest arch.
