He is often described as a caudillo. This term refers to charismatic populist leaders from a military background. Many caudillos found support among indigenous populations. Carrera served as president from 1844 to 1848 and again from 1851 until his death in 1865. In 1854, he was appointed president for life. His leadership occurred during a period of major change for Central American nations.

Carrera was born on October 24, 1814, in Guatemala City. He came from a humble background and was a mestizo. During his early life, he was illiterate and could not read or write. He worked first as a farmhand and later as a swineherd in Mataquescuintla. He also served in the army during a civil war from 1826 to 1829. These early experiences helped him understand the lives of the rural poor.

His rise to power began around 1837 when rural masses expressed grievances against the liberal government. A cholera epidemic increased the frustration of the people. Carrera led an armed resistance of indigenous people and poor peasants. They were mostly located in the east and south, an area called The Mountain. This movement was strongly pro-Catholic. They wanted to restore colonial traditions that the liberal government had moved away from.

Carrera used a unique military strategy often called hybrid warfare.

His soldiers were not well equipped for large-scale conventional wars. However, they were trained in local militias. This allowed them to fight successfully against the larger forces of the Federal Republic of Central America. They would fight conventional battles and then use guerrilla tactics. This helped them survive even when they were outnumbered.

One of his greatest rivals was the liberal leader Francisco Morazán.

In 1838, Morazán's forces invaded Guatemala and executed Carrera's father-in-law, Pascual García. This event made Carrera deeply determined to fight. Although Carrera suffered several defeats, he had a habit of disassembling and regrouping. In April 1839, he took Guatemala City by surprise. This victory allowed him to reinstate conservative leadership in the country.

Carrera also had to manage the secession of Los Altos.

In 1838, a group in Quetzaltenango formed the independent State of Los Altos. This region was vital because it held much of Guatemala's economic activity. The Guatemalan government sent Carrera as commanding general to stop them. He defeated General Agustin Guzman and brought the region back under Guatemalan control in 1840. He then imposed a strict conservative regime in the area.

In 1840, Morazán attempted a second invasion of Guatemala with 1,500 soldiers.

Carrera used a clever defense strategy. He pretended to flee the capital to draw Morazán's army in. Once the enemy was positioned, Carrera launched a surprise attack. He focused his fire on the Central Park area. This tactic caused heavy casualties for Morazán's army and ended his career in Central America.

Carrera's legacy is viewed differently by different groups of people. After liberals regained power in 1871, they dismissed his regime. They often portrayed him as an illiterate man who was manipulated by others. However, he remained a central figure in the history of the nation. He ruled through many conflicts, including disputes with the United Kingdom over Belize. His long era of leadership helped define the borders and the government of modern Guatemala.
