Seondeok was the daughter of King Jinpyeong. Some books say she was very wise and kind. She wanted to help her people live well. She sent inspectors to help the poor and the elderly. She also built Cheomseongdae. This was a stone tower used to study the stars. It helped farmers in her land.
Her time as queen was hard. Other kingdoms attacked Silla. To help her people feel safe, she built a huge temple. It was called Hwangnyongsa. The pagoda there was very tall. It was one of the tallest in East Asia.
Some leaders did not want a woman to rule. A man named Bidam led a rebellion against her. A leader named Kim Yu-sin helped stop the fight.
Queen Seondeok was a very important leader in ancient Korea. She was the first queen to rule the kingdom of Silla. Silla was one of the Three Kingdoms that lived in Korea long ago. She ruled from the year 632 until 647.
Seondeok was the daughter of King Jinpyeong and Queen Maya. She had two sisters named Cheonmyeong and Seonhwa. It is not clear which sister was born first. One book says Seondeok was the oldest daughter. Her father did not have a son to take his place. He thought about giving the crown to a man named Kim Yongsu. This man was married to Seondeok's sister. Seondeok asked her father for a chance to compete for the throne. She wanted to prove she was worthy of leading. Her father saw her strong spirit and gave her the chance.
Being a queen was not easy for her. Many people did not want a woman to rule. Some officials even planned a rebellion in 631. They wanted to stop her from being crowned. The plan was found and the leaders were punished. Once she became queen in 632, she worked hard for her people. She sent inspectors to help the poor and the elderly. She even let peasants skip paying taxes for a whole year. She also built Cheomseongdae to study the stars. This helped farmers know when to plant crops.
Later, Silla faced many hard times and wars. Kingdoms like Baekje and Goguryeo attacked Silla. The queen wanted to make her people feel safe and united. She worked with a monk named Jajang to build a huge temple. It was called Hwangnyongsa. The temple had a very tall pagoda. It was one of the tallest buildings in East Asia. Some people worried about the cost of the building. The queen told them to use bricks from her own palace if needed. She believed this work would show Silla was still strong.
In 647, a man named Bidam led a large rebellion. He believed a woman should not rule the country. During this time, the queen was very sick. A star fell from the sky near her home. Bidam used this to scare his followers. A leader named Kim Yu-sin helped stop the rebellion. He used a large kite with a burning scarecrow to calm the people. The rebellion ended in less than ten days. Queen Seondeok died shortly after in February 647. She was buried on a sacred mountain in Gyeongju.
Queen Seondeok was a significant monarch of the Silla Kingdom. Silla was one of the Three Kingdoms of ancient Korea. She reigned as Queen Regnant from 632 to 647. This means she held the full power of a ruler. She was the twenty-seventh ruler of Silla. She was also the first woman to sit on the throne as a reigning queen. Historical texts describe her character in several ways. The Samguk sagi calls her generous, benevolent, wise, and smart.
Seondeok held many formal titles during her life. One title was yeowang, which means "female king." In East Asian languages, there was no specific word for a female king. Therefore, people used this term to distinguish her from male monarchs. She was also called yeodaewang, meaning "Great Queen." When she first took the throne, she used the title Seongjohwanggo. This title means "Empress descended from divine ancestors." This shows that Silla used both kingly and imperial titles.
Her path to the throne involved great determination. She was the daughter of King Jinpyeong and Queen Maya. Her father had no sons to inherit the crown. He considered giving the throne to Kim Yongsu, a son-in-law. Princess Deokman, who later became Seondeok, challenged this decision. She asked her father for a chance to compete for the throne. She insisted she had the same right to rule as a man. Her father saw her strength and allowed her to prove herself. Eventually, she was named the successor to King Jinpyeong.
Ruling was difficult because many officials opposed a female leader. In 631, two officials named Chilsuk and Seokpum planned a rebellion. The plot was discovered and suppressed by the state. Chilsuk and his family were executed as punishment. Seokpum tried to escape but was eventually caught and executed. Once Seondeok became queen in 632, she focused on her people. She sent royal inspectors to care for widows, orphans, and the elderly. She also provided tax exemptions for peasants for one year.
Queen Seondeok also invested in science and religion. In 633, she built Cheomseongdae, an astronomical observatory. This structure helped farmers by studying the stars. She also worked closely with the Buddhist monk Jajang. To protect Silla from foreign attacks, she decided to build a massive temple. This was the Hwangnyongsa temple. It featured a nine-story pagoda that was very tall. The pagoda was between 68 and 80 meters high. This made it one of the tallest structures in East Asia.
Silla faced many threats from the kingdoms of Baekje and Goguryeo. These neighbors attacked Silla's fortresses and blocked sea routes. To survive, Seondeok sought an alliance with the Tang dynasty of China. This was a strategic move to stabilize her kingdom. During this time of crisis, she also faced internal trouble. A nobleman named Bidam led a rebellion in 647. He argued that women should no longer rule the country. The rebellion lasted for less than ten days.
Kim Yu-sin played a vital role in saving the queen's government. During the rebellion, a star fell near the queen's home. Bidam used this event to frighten his followers. Kim Yu-sin flew a large kite with a burning scarecrow. This made it look like the star had returned to its place. This act discouraged Bidam's followers and ended the revolt. Queen Seondeok died in February 647, shortly after the rebellion. Some historians believe she died of illness. Others suggest the shock of the rebellion may have contributed to her death. She was buried on Mount Nangsan in Gyeongju.
