Quad Cities

The Quad Cities is a group of five cities.

They sit by the big Mississippi River. Some cities are in Iowa. Some cities are in Illinois.

Long ago, many people lived near the river. They used the water to live and trade.

Boats used to travel on the river. The water had rocky spots. This made it hard for boats to pass.

People built a bridge to cross the water. This helped people move much faster.

Many people work in big factories here. One famous company is John Deere.

It is a busy place to live.

They sit near the Mississippi River. This river flows from east to west here. Two cities are in Iowa. These are Davenport and Bettendorf. Three cities are in Illinois. They are Rock Island, Moline, and East Moline.

Long ago, Native American tribes lived by the river. They used the water to trade. Later, steamboats traveled the river. The water had rocky spots called rapids. These rocks made travel hard. Now, the rocks are under a lake.

Many people work in big factories. One famous company is John Deere. It started in Moline in 1848. It is the largest employer in the area today.

People also visit places like the Figge Art Museum. The region is a busy place to live. It is a large area along the Mississippi River. It sits west of Chicago.

Long ago, many different cultures lived near these rivers. Indigenous peoples used the riverbanks for their homes for thousands of years. The Sauk and Fox tribes used the water for trading. The Sauk people had a large village called Saukenuk. Later, steamboats became a major way to travel. The river had rocky spots called the Rock Island Rapids. These rapids were hard for boats to cross. Pilots like Phillip Suiter helped guide boats through the rocks. Today, those rocks are six feet under a lake.

Industry helped the cities grow very quickly. Many people wanted to use the river for power. In 1848, John Deere moved his plough business to Moline.

His company became a huge part of the area. It is now the largest employer in the Quad Cities. In 1856, the first railroad bridge connected Davenport and Rock Island. This bridge replaced slow ferries and ice bridges. An angry steamboater even crashed a boat named the Effie Afton into the bridge. A lawyer named Abraham Lincoln even helped defend the railroad company in court.

The region has changed its name many times. In the early 1900s, people called the area the "Tri-Cities." This name described Davenport, Rock Island, and Moline. By the 1930s, people started using the name "Quad Cities." This was because East Moline became an important part of the group.

Later, the town of Bettendorf grew very large. Some people even suggested calling it the "Quint Cities." However, the name Quad Cities was already very famous.

Local leaders decided to keep the name Quad Cities to include everyone.

Life in the Quad Cities has seen many changes. In the late 1970s, many large factories closed down. Companies like International Harvester and Caterpillar had to change how they worked. Since the 1990s, people have worked hard to make the area new again.

They built the Figge Art Museum and the John Deere Commons. Davenport even won an award for being a very livable city. In 2012, the area was known for having many new high-tech jobs. Today, it remains a busy and important place along the river.

The Quad Cities is a major metropolitan region in the United States. It is located within the Mississippi River Valley. The area consists of five distinct cities spanning two different states. Davenport and Bettendorf are located in southeastern Iowa. Rock Island, Moline, and East Moline are located in northwestern Illinois.

This region is the largest metropolitan area along the Mississippi River between St. Louis and Minneapolis–Saint Paul. It is also considered a part of the Great Lakes Megalopolis. As of 2023, the metropolitan area had a population estimate of 467,817. The Combined Statistical Area (CSA) population was slightly higher at 474,019. This makes it the 90th-largest CSA in the nation.

Long before European settlers arrived, the confluence of rivers was a vital location. Many different indigenous cultures lived there for thousands of years. They used the riverbanks and waterways for their many settlements. At the time of European contact, the Sauk and Fox tribes lived there. The Sauk tribe had a principal village called Saukenuk. This was the birthplace of the 19th-century war chief, Black Hawk.

In 1832, the US defeated the Sauk and their allies in the Black Hawk War. Following this, Sauk chief Keokuk signed a treaty in Davenport. This treaty resulted in the Native Americans ceding their land to the United States. Today, the Black Hawk State Historic Site in Rock Island preserves part of the historic Saukenuk area.

Early urban growth was driven by riverboat traffic on the Mississippi. Between LeClaire, Iowa, and Rock Island, the river contained the Rock Island Rapids. These were finger-like rock projections that protruded from the banks. These rapids made it very difficult for steamboats to travel through. A small industry grew to help these boats navigate the water. Boat crews needed rest areas before they reached the dangerous rapids. They also needed to hire expert pilots to guide them through the rocks. One famous pilot was Phillip Suiter, the first licensed pilot on the upper Mississippi.

When water levels were low, goods were moved by wagon around the rapids. Today, the rocks are submerged six feet underwater by a lake. This lake was created by the use of two locks and dams.

The Industrial Revolution brought even more development to the region. Entrepreneurs looked to the Mississippi River for power generation. The combination of energy and easy transport attracted many industrialists. In 1848, John Deere moved his plough business to Moline. His company was incorporated in 1868. Today, John Deere is the largest employer in the Quad Cities.

Transportation also changed with the arrival of the railroad. In 1856, the Rock Island Railroad Company built the first bridge across the Mississippi. This bridge connected Davenport and Rock Island. It replaced slow seasonal ferries and winter ice bridges. This new technology even led to a famous legal case. After a steamboat crashed into the bridge, Abraham Lincoln served as the trial lawyer. He won the case after taking it to the US Supreme Court.

The identity of the region has evolved through several different names. After the Civil War, the river towns began to develop a common identity. By World War I, Davenport, Rock Island, and Moline called themselves the "Tri-Cities." They grew around a small bend in the Mississippi River. During the 1930s, the term "Quad Cities" became popular as East Moline gained equal status.

The name changed again when Bettendorf grew very quickly. An Alcoa plant opened east of Davenport in 1948. This growth led some to suggest the name "Quint Cities." However, the name "Quad Cities" was already too famous to change. Local officials chose to keep the name to remain inclusive of all five cities.

Economic changes in the late 1970s caused significant industrial restructuring. Many large agricultural manufacturing companies scaled back their operations. Factories like International Harvester in Rock Island and Case IH in Bettendorf closed. Moline-based John Deere also cut its labor headcount by half. Later, Caterpillar closed factories in Mount Joy and Bettendorf. Since the 1990s, the region has worked hard to revitalize its economy.

New projects include the River Renaissance in Davenport. Moline has also invested in its downtown area. They opened the John Deere Commons and the Vibrant Arena at The MARK. These efforts helped the area regain its strength.

The Quad Cities have received many honors for their recent growth. In 2007, Davenport and Rock Island were named the "most livable small city." In 2008, CNN ranked Bettendorf as a top place to buy a house. The area was also named the "most affordable metro" by Forbes in 2010. By 2012, the region was recognized for fast growth in high-tech jobs.

Modern Woodman Park was even voted the best minor league ballpark in America in 2013. These successes show how the region continues to adapt and grow.
