Today, Qatar is a hereditary monarchy. It is ruled by the House of Thani. The current emir is Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani. The emir holds nearly all executive, legislative, and judicial authority. He appoints the prime minister and the cabinet. The Consultative Assembly, or Shura Council, can block legislation. However, the emir appoints all members of this council. In 2024, the country moved to abolish elections for the Assembly. The council is now a fully appointed body.
The economy of Qatar is very wealthy due to its natural resources. It holds the world's third-largest natural gas reserves and oil reserves. 
Qatar has become a significant player in global affairs. It is a major non-NATO ally of the United States. The country is also a middle power in the Arab world. Its influence is boosted by the Al Jazeera Media Network.
