Qasem Soleimani was a very important military leader in Iran.

His military career started after the Iranian Revolution in 1979.
In 1998, Soleimani became the commander of the Quds Force.
His life ended during a very tense time in history.

Qasem Soleimani was a high-ranking Iranian military officer. He was a central figure in the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, also known as the IRGC.
Soleimani's early life was defined by hard work and religious devotion. He was born on March 11, 1957, in the village of Qanat-e Malek in Kerman Province. His family was part of the ethnic Lur Soleimani tribe. At age 13, he left school to work on construction sites in Kerman. He did this to help his father pay off agricultural debts. By 1975, he was working as a contractor for the Kerman Water Organization. During this time, he also attended sermons by Hojjat Kamyab, a preacher who encouraged revolutionary activities. These early experiences shaped his path toward military service following the Iranian Revolution in 1979.
His military career grew rapidly during the Iran-Iraq War, which lasted from 1980 to 1988.
As commander of the Quds Force, Soleimani expanded Iran's influence across the Middle East.
Because of these activities, Soleimani faced significant international pressure and legal consequences. The United States designated him as a terrorist in 2005. He was also personally sanctioned by the United Nations and the European Union. In 2011, the Obama administration sanctioned him for an alleged plot to assassinate the Saudi ambassador to the U.S. in Washington, D.C. His influence was so vast that former Mossad director Yossi Cohen stated his strategies tightened a "noose" around Israel. Many intelligence officials saw him as the primary strategist for deterring Western influence in the region. His ability to manage conflicts in Lebanon, Syria, and Iraq made him a key power broker.
Soleimani's life ended during a period of intense regional tension. On January 3, 2020, he was killed in a targeted drone strike in Baghdad, Iraq. This strike was ordered by U.S. President Donald Trump. The event caused an immediate and violent reaction from the Iranian government. Iranian officials publicly mourned him, and many in Iran viewed him as a national hero.
Ultimately, Qasem Soleimani remains a deeply polarizing figure in global history. To his supporters in Iran, he was a brave commander and a martyr. To the United States and its allies, he was a dangerous operative responsible for many deaths.
