He is best known for his leadership during the Russian Civil War. As a commander in the anti-Bolshevik Volunteer Army, he eventually became the final commander-in-chief of the White forces in Southern Russia. His career spanned several major global conflicts, including the Russo-Japanese War and World War I. Wrangel was recognized as a skilled administrator and a decisive military strategist. He played a critical role in organizing the Russian Army during a period of intense political upheaval.

Wrangel’s path to military leadership was not immediate. Born in 1878 in the Kovno Governorate, he came from a noble family with a 700-year history of service. His ancestors had served rulers in Sweden, Prussia, Austria, and Russia. Although his family produced many generals, his father wanted him to follow a civilian path. Pyotr studied at the School of Mines in Saint Petersburg to become a mining engineer. He graduated at the top of his class, earning a gold medal.

However, the outbreak of the Russo-Japanese War in 1904 changed his direction. He volunteered for combat duty in the Far East, which led him to choose a permanent military career.

During World War I, Wrangel achieved significant distinction on the battlefield. In August 1914, he led a cavalry squadron in an attack against German positions in East Prussia. When other officers fell, Wrangel took command and led a charge against a camouflaged artillery battery. Although the mission resulted in heavy losses for his men and horses, Wrangel survived. This act of heroism earned him the Order of St. George, a prestigious military decoration.

He eventually rose to the rank of major general and served as an aide-de-camp to Tsar Nicholas II.

The Russian Revolution of 1917 brought massive instability to the nation. Following the Tsar's abdication, Wrangel viewed the resulting anarchy as a threat to the country's survival. After the October Revolution, he faced personal danger when Red sailors occupied Yalta in Crimea. He was briefly arrested but was eventually released. In August 1918, he joined the Volunteer Army to fight the Bolsheviks. He was initially given command of the 1st Cavalry Division, which consisted of only 1,200 men.

Despite being outnumbered by Red forces, he used aggressive cavalry tactics to find success.

Wrangel’s leadership style was characterized by both tactical boldness and strict discipline. He became famous for reviving the "stirrup to stirrup" cavalry charge, which proved effective against infantry. In 1919, he successfully captured the strategic city of Tsaritsyn.

However, his military successes were often complicated by political rivalries. He clashed with his superior, Anton Denikin, over the strategic direction of the Moscow Directive. This disagreement led to Wrangel's dismissal from command in December 1919. Following Denikin's resignation, Wrangel was elected to lead the remaining White forces in Crimea.

In Crimea, Wrangel attempted to rebuild the White movement through both military and political means. He established the Government of South Russia and introduced radical land reforms to gain popular support. He hoped these changes would create a more stable foundation for his administration. Despite these efforts, his forces were eventually defeated by the Red Army. In November 1920, Wrangel organized a massive evacuation to rescue his followers.
