He was born Ghanashyam Dahal on December 11, 1954. His family lived in a place called Lewade. When he was eight, his family moved to the Terai region. This is a fertile lowland area in southern Nepal. He later chose a new name for himself. He picked the name Pushpa Kamal, which means "Lotus Flower." He grew up to study agriculture in the Chitwan District. Before he was a leader, he worked as a high school teacher. Seeing much poverty as a young man changed his life. It led him to join left-wing politics to seek change.

His political journey began with several different groups. In 1981, he joined the Communist Party of Nepal (Fourth Convention). Later, in 1989, he became a leader in a group called the Communist Party of Nepal (Mashal). This group eventually became the Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist). Dahal led this party during a long civil war in Nepal. The war began in February 1996 after a list of demands was given to the government. These demands asked for better lives and more democracy. Dahal helped direct military efforts in the mountains and western Nepal. He worked hard to establish areas of control for his party.

Peace eventually came to Nepal through many difficult talks. In 2005, Dahal and other groups made a twelve-point agreement. They wanted to move away from the rule of King Gyanendra. This king was seen as a barrier to progress in the country. In 2006, a ceasefire was announced after large protests in Kathmandu.

The leaders agreed to work together to write a new constitution. They also wanted to decide if Nepal should have a king or a republic. This process helped move the country toward a new way of governing. Dahal worked with other parties to make these big changes happen.

Because of his party's success, Dahal became prime minister three different times. He first took this role in August 2008. He was elected after his party won a large number of votes. He resigned in May 2009 after a disagreement with the army chief. His second time as prime minister was from 2016 to 2017. He returned for a third time in December 2022. During this time, he worked with many different political partners. His third term ended on July 12, 2024. He lost a vote of confidence in the parliament that day.

Life after being prime minister has also been busy for Dahal. After leaving office, he became the Leader of the Opposition in July 2024. He held this position until September 2025. Throughout his life, Dahal has stayed focused on his political ideas. He has also had a family with his wife, Sita Poudel. They had three daughters and one son. Dahal's story shows how one person can change a whole nation. He moved from being a teacher to one of the most powerful leaders in Nepal.

Born Ghanashyam Dahal on December 11, 1954, in Lewade, he later adopted the name Pushpa Kamal, which means "Lotus Flower." His political journey is defined by his transition from a revolutionary leader to a head of government. He has played a vital role in moving Nepal from a monarchy toward a republic. His life reflects the massive political shifts that occurred in the country over several decades.

Dahal's early life provided the foundation for his political beliefs. He was born into a Brahmin Hindu family. When he was eight years old, his family moved to the Terai, a fertile lowland region in southern Nepal. He later moved to Kathmandu for his studies and attended Patan Multiple Campus. He eventually earned a diploma of science in agriculture from the Institute of Agriculture and Animal Science in Chitwan. After his studies, he worked as a high school teacher in the Gorkha district. Observing severe poverty during his youth led him toward left-wing politics.

His rise through political organizations was steady and significant. In 1981, he joined the Communist Party of Nepal (Fourth Convention). By 1989, he became the general secretary of the Communist Party of Nepal (Mashal). This group eventually transformed into the Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist). Dahal led this party during a period of intense conflict known as the Nepalese Civil War. The conflict began in February 1996 after a list of 40 demands was presented to the government. These demands focused on nationalism, democracy, and livelihood. They included requests to redistribute land to the homeless and to stop the domination of foreign capital.

The civil war era was marked by both military action and intense political negotiation. Dahal directed the military efforts of the CPN (Maoist Centre) to establish control in western Nepal and mountainous regions.

However, political shifts eventually led to a peace process. In November 2005, Dahal and the Seven Party Alliance signed a twelve-point agreement. This document identified the monarchy of King Gyanendra as a barrier to progress. The Maoists pledged to support human rights and a multi-party system. Following massive protests in Kathmandu in 2006, a ceasefire was announced. This led to the Comprehensive Peace Accord, which aimed to incorporate the Maoists into a new interim government.

Dahal's first term as Prime Minister began in August 2008. This followed the April 2008 elections for the Constituent Assembly, where his party won a large majority. He won the Kathmandu constituency-10 seat by a very large margin. He also won the Rolpa constituency-2 seat with 34,230 votes. His first term ended on May 4, 2009, after a disagreement with the army chief, Rookmangud Katawal. This disagreement occurred when Dahal attempted to sack the army chief, but the President opposed the move. He then transitioned into roles within the evolving democratic system of Nepal.

His later terms as Prime Minister involved complex political alliances. He served a second term from 2016 to 2017 under a rotational government agreement. His third term began in December 2022 after the general election. During this period, he received a vote of confidence from 268 out of 270 members of the House. However, his third tenure was marked by changing political partnerships. He changed alliances between the CPN (UML) and the Nepali Congress three times. His term finally ended on July 12, 2024, after he lost a vote of confidence. In that vote, 194 out of 258 members voted against him, and K. P. Sharma Oli replaced him.

Dahal's career demonstrates the complexities of leadership in a changing nation. After leaving the premiership, he became the Leader of the Opposition in July 2024. He held this role until September 2025. His life has been characterized by a shift from revolutionary activism to parliamentary governance. He has navigated the transition from a monarchy to a republic and managed the difficult task of building coalitions. His story remains a key part of how Nepal established its modern political identity.
