Pumice forms during big volcanic eruptions. It starts as super-heated rock. This rock is under a lot of pressure. When the volcano erupts, the rock shoots out fast. This causes two things to happen at once. The rock cools down quickly. The pressure also drops fast.

The formation of pumice is a rapid and violent process. It begins when super-heated, highly pressurized magma is ejected from a volcano. As the magma leaves the volcano, it undergoes simultaneous rapid cooling and rapid depressurization. This drop in pressure causes dissolved gases, like water and CO2, to exsolve. Exsolving is when gases come out of a liquid, similar to bubbles forming in a soda. The rapid cooling freezes these gas bubbles into a solid glass matrix.

Pumice is categorized by the shape of its vesicles, or holes. Most pumice contains tubular microvesicles. These long, thin holes can give the rock a silky or fibrous texture. This type is often called tube pumice, woody pumice, or pipe pumice. Other pumice has subspherical or spherical vesicles. These shapes result from high vapor pressure during an eruption. The thickness of the material between these bubbles determines the rock's density.

It is important to distinguish pumice from other volcanic rocks like scoria. Scoria is also a vesicular rock, but it is much denser and darker. Scoria has larger vesicles and thicker walls than pumice. While some scoria might float briefly, it usually sinks. Another related rock is reticulite, a type of highly vesicular scoria. Reticulite forms from very tall lava fountains. It has a characteristic hexagonal structure made of interlocking glass fibers.

History shows that massive eruptions can create enormous amounts of this material. In 1883, the eruption of Krakatoa produced pumice rafts that drifted in the Indian Ocean for 20 years. In 1991, the eruption of Mount Pinatubo in the Philippines ejected white pumice with high phenocryst content. Phenocrysts are visible crystals within the volcanic glass. In 2012, the Havre Seamount underwater eruption created floating blankets of pumice five meters thick.
