The region is famous for its distinct cultural and linguistic identity. This identity remains strong, especially in the interior parts of the land.\n\nThe geological and human history of Provence began during the Paleolithic period. This was a time of massive climate shifts and changing sea levels. At the start of this period, the sea level was 150 meters higher than today. By the end of the period, the sea level had dropped significantly. It reached levels 100 to 150 meters below current sea levels. These shifts meant that early cave dwellings were often flooded or eroded away.

One remarkable discovery is the Cosquer Cave. A diver named Henri Cosquer found its entrance 37 meters below the sea surface. Inside, ancient drawings of bison, seals, and horses date back to between 27,000 and 19,000 BC.\n\nAs the climate warmed, new human societies began to form. Around 6000 BC, the Castelnovian people lived near Châteauneuf-les-Martigues. They were among the first in Europe to domesticate wild sheep. This allowed them to stop moving constantly and settle in one place. They even created the first pottery made in France. Later, the Chasséens arrived as farmers and warriors. They eventually displaced the earlier pastoral people. Around 2500 BC, the Courronniens arrived by sea to settle along the coast.

These early civilizations left many traces, such as Bronze Age dolmens near Draguignan.\n\nBefore the Romans arrived, various tribes occupied the land. The Ligures lived in the rocky and dry terrain. An ancient geographer named Strabo described them as people who climbed mountains like goats. They were a warlike group that once invaded Italy. Between the 8th and 5th centuries BC, Celtic tribes moved into the region. These Celts used iron weapons to defeat local tribes using bronze. Different tribes, such as the Caturiges and the Salyens, formed their own territories. They lived in hilltop forts known as oppida.

These tribes traded goods like iron, gold, honey, and cheese.\n\nGreek influence changed the coast through maritime trade. Traders from Rhodes visited the area in the 7th century BC. They gave their names to the Rhodanos, which is the modern Rhône river. In about 600 BC, colonists from Phocaea established Massalia at modern-day Marseille.

Massalia became a major trading port in the ancient world. It was governed by an aristocratic republic of 600 wealthy citizens. The Greeks also founded many other towns, including Nikaia, which is now Nice. They established trade routes that reached as far as the Baltic Sea.\n\nOne of the most famous residents of Massalia was Pytheas. He was a mathematician, astronomer, and navigator. Pytheas used mathematical instruments to find the latitude of Marseille. He was the first scientist to observe that the moon controls the tides. He also led an expedition to the Atlantic, visiting Iceland and Norway.

During his travels, he described the midnight sun and drift ice. Although his trip was not a commercial success, his scientific work was vital. He proved how much the natural world was connected through movement and cycles.\n\nThe Romans eventually took control of the region. They named it Provincia Romana, which means \"the Roman province.\"
