Long ago, people spoke one ancient language. We call it Proto-Indo-European.
Scholars think this language was spoken a long time ago. It may have been used from 4500 BCE to 2500 BCE. Many people believe it started in the Pontic-Caspian steppe. In 1818, Rasmus Christian Rask elaborated on these linguistic correspondences. Later, Franz Bopp published works on the conjugation systems of ancient languages. Scholars debate where and when these people lived. The most popular idea is the Kurgan hypothesis, proposed by Marija Gimbutas in 1956. This theory suggests PIE was spoken between 4500 BCE and 2500 BCE. It places the original homeland in the Pontic-Caspian steppe of eastern Europe. Another major theory is the Anatolian hypothesis. This suggests the language spread from Anatolia alongside the rise of agriculture. Recent studies of ancient DNA have added new layers to these debates. Many researchers now see evidence of migrations from the Pontic steppe toward Europe.
The descendants of PIE are incredibly diverse. The Anatolian branch, including Hittite, is now extinct. The Tocharian branch, found in northwest China, is also extinct. However, many other branches have living descendants. The Italic branch led to the Romance languages, like French and Italian. The Germanic branch includes English, German, and Swedish. The Indo-Iranian branch includes Hindi, Urdu, and Persian.
