The history of this technique spans nearly two centuries. Arthur H. Robinson credited Henry Drury Harness with creating one of the first clear attempts at proportional mapping. In 1838, Harness produced a map of cargo traffic in Ireland using proportional widths. Later, in 1851, W. Bone included maps in the official Census of Great Britain. These maps showed significant towns sized proportionally to their population. Charles Joseph Minard later introduced major innovations. He used symbols to represent entire regions and even incorporated color and statistical charts directly into the point symbols. 
Choosing the correct variable is essential for a successful map. The best variables are ratio variables that do not include negative values. This is because a symbol cannot have a negative size. The most intuitive variables are spatially extensive, meaning they measure a total amount or volume. Examples include total population, shipping tonnage, or agricultural production. Some maps use spatially intensive variables, such as GDP per capita. This represents an allotment, or how an amount is distributed among individuals. 
Design choices regarding symbol shape also impact how we read data. Circles are the most common shape used in professional cartography. They are compact, which means they do not hide too much of the underlying map. They are also easy to scale and work well when symbols overlap. Some designers use pictographic symbols, such as a silhouette of a wheat shaft, to represent farming. While these look intuitive, they can create visual clutter.
