His military career included a period of imprisonment. After the Battle of Vlotho in 1638, Rupert was captured. He was held as a prisoner in Linz. His captors tried to convert him to Catholicism. The Emperor even offered him freedom and a principality if he converted. Rupert refused to change his Calvinist faith. During his captivity, he practiced etching and reading military texts. He also had a romantic affair with his gaoler's daughter. He was eventually released in 1641 after making a formal commitment.
