In Japan, the technology arrived during the Asuka or Sueki period between 552 and 710 CE. This era saw more sophisticated wares and higher firing temperatures in rudimentary kilns. This progression continued through the Nara and Heian periods. Higher temperatures allowed for the use of new glazes in colors like green, white, and yellowish brown. 
Modern technology has introduced electric wheels, which are common in schools and studios.
