Porus was an ancient king in India.
In 326 BC, Porus fought Alexander the Great. This was the Battle of the Hydaspes. Alexander's army crossed a river on a stormy night. Porus used many soldiers and war elephants.

Alexander was impressed by Porus. He did not take the king's power away. Instead, Alexander let Porus keep his land. He even gave Porus more land to rule. Porus became a leader for a large area.
Later, a man named Eudemus killed Porus. We know about Porus mostly from Greek books. Indian books do not mention him. He is still a famous figure in many stories and movies today.
Porus was a powerful king in ancient India. He ruled a large area in the Punjab region. His lands sat between two big rivers. These rivers were the Jhelum and the Chenab.
In 326 BC, a great conflict began. Alexander the Great led an army into India. He wanted to cross the rivers to move further east. Porus chose to fight Alexander to protect his land. This famous fight is called the Battle of the Hydaspes.
Porus prepared his army for the main fight on the plains. He put his infantry and war elephants on the front lines. He kept his horses and chariots on the sides.
Even though Alexander won, he did not treat Porus poorly. Alexander was very impressed by the king's bravery. He decided to let Porus keep his throne. In fact, Alexander gave him even more land to rule. Porus' territory grew to include lands to the southeast. His rule reached as far as the Beas River. This made Porus a very important leader in the region. He ruled much of the land east of the Jhelum. He was the only local leader without a Greek co-ruler. This was a very special position for him to hold.
History tells us that Porus died some time after the battle. Some sources say he died between 321 and 315 BC. A man named Eudemus is said to have killed him.
