In 2025, a new species called Physalia mikazuki was also described from Japan.
The man o' war is a powerful predator in the marine food web. Its tentacles can reach lengths of over 30 meters. These tentacles contain cnidocytes, which are tiny stinging cells. When these cells are triggered, they inject venom to paralyze prey like fish and crustaceans. While the sting is painful to humans, some animals are immune.
