He served as the head of the Catholic Church and the ruler of the Papal States from 1503 until February 1513. Because of his intense military leadership, he earned nicknames like the "Warrior Pope," the "Battle Pope," and the "Fearsome Pope." Some historians suggest he chose the name Julius to emulate the Roman leader Julius Caesar. His leadership style combined religious authority with aggressive political and military expansion. Through his actions, he centralized the power of the Papal States. He also ensured the papacy remained a crucial political force in Europe throughout the 16th century.

Julius II's political life was shaped by the Italian Wars. During this time, major European powers fought for control over the Italian Peninsula. France controlled the Duchy of Milan, and the Spanish ruled the Kingdom of Naples. Maximilian I of Austria also sought to become Holy Roman Emperor.

While the conclave that elected him suggested he focus on a crusade, Julius prioritized centralizing his own territories. He aimed to "free Italy from the barbarians," referring to foreign powers. He targeted the House of Borgia to reduce their influence, successfully exiling them. He also joined the League of Cambrai in 1508 to capture territory from the Venetian Republic. Later, he formed the Holy League in 1511 to expel the French from Italy.

His military campaigns were direct and often personal. Julius II did not just command from a distance; he personally led papal armed forces. One notable example was his leadership during the Siege of Mirandola.

Although he faced defeats and heavy losses at the Battle of Ravenna, his strategies eventually worked. He helped force French troops under Louis XII to retreat behind the Alps. By 1512, he helped restore various Italian families to power in the vacuum left by the French. This period is often seen as a moment when Renaissance Italy came closest to unification. However, foreign armies remained deeply involved in the region's politics.

Before becoming Pope, Giuliano della Rovere had a rapid rise in the Church.

He was born in Albisola to a noble but impoverished family. His uncle, Francesco della Rovere, became Pope Sixtus IV. This connection allowed Giuliano to be appointed Bishop of Carpentras in 1471. He was soon raised to the rank of cardinal. He was known for holding many powerful offices at once, a practice known as pluralism. He also engaged in simony, which is the practice of buying or selling church offices. As a young man, he was described as rough and coarse.

Julius II was also a massive patron of the arts and culture.

In 1506, he initiated the rebuilding of the massive St. Peter's Basilica. To fund this, he allowed people to seek indulgences by donating money to the Church. That same year, he established the Vatican Museums. He also organized the Swiss Guard to serve as his personal protection. His commissions changed the course of art history. In 1508, he asked Michelangelo to paint the Sistine Chapel. He also commissioned the Raphael Rooms for the artist Raphael.

His influence extended far beyond the borders of Italy. Julius II showed significant interest in the New World. He ratified the Treaty of Tordesillas, which helped divide influence in the Americas. He established the first bishoprics in the Americas, which began the Catholicization of Latin America. This connected the political power of the papacy to the expansion of the Spanish and Portuguese empires. His reign helped establish the Church as a major force in global affairs. He even planned a crusade to retake Constantinople from the Ottoman Empire, though he died before it could begin.

Even after his death, the legacy of Julius II remained a subject of debate. The writer Erasmus of Rotterdam wrote a satire called *Julius Excluded from Heaven*. In this work, Erasmus depicted the Pope as a worldly and drunken figure. This shows how much his intense personality and political methods impacted people's views. His life remains a primary example of how religious and political power merged during the Renaissance. He was a man who used both the brush of the artist and the sword of the soldier to shape his world.
